Steve Jobs? Dream Device Has Arrived

Don Mattrick, President of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft reveals the Xbox One during a press event in Redmond, Washington May 21, 2013.

Just before he died, Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson about his dream for revolutionizing television. His fantasy device would control all the many doodads that crowd your living room?DVRs, game consoles, Blu-ray players?and would connect to the vast world of entertainment available online. Best of all, it would be drop-dead simple to control?no more futzing with the Input button to switch between different kinds of content, no more fiddling with different remotes to control your devices. ?It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine,? Jobs said. ?I finally cracked it.?

Today, I saw something very close to Steve Jobs? dream device. Just like he envisioned, this machine turns itself into the hub of your living room. It plays video games, Blu-ray discs, TV shows, and everything you could possibly want from the Internet. It switches between this stuff seamlessly?you can forget about the Input button. And it does indeed have the simplest user interface imaginable, an eerily accurate voice-recognition system that is far more intuitive than a remote control. Want to watch MTV? Want to see what?s on HBO? Want to switch between TV and a Blu-ray? Just tell it what to do, and it will respond instantly.

Before you say anything, though, you?ve got to say its name: Xbox.

That?s right: In a new device it?s calling the Xbox One, Microsoft has done what Apple has long been rumored to do. It has created a near-perfect living room machine, one that has the potential to finally make it simple for you to watch or play anything you want, from anywhere, very quickly. Here?s how it works: Go to your TV and say, ?Xbox on.? Your TV and Xbox turn on immediately, with no pause for booting up or logging in. You?re presented with a menu?it looks very much like the Windows 8 home screen?featuring apps, games, and other stuff you?ve recently interacted with. Now go to town. Say, ?Watch CNN.? Your TV goes to the channel instantly. Say, ?Xbox game,? and the device switches to the game you were playing. Say ?Snap Skype? and the One brings up Skype in a panel to the side of your screen. Now tell it to call your mom. The One can also add its own elements on top of a TV broadcast?for instance, it can show your fantasy football stats as you?re watching an NFL game.

What?s remarkable about this is how quickly the device switches from input to input?going from TV to a Netflix show is as quick as changing the channel on your TV, and it happens with natural language commands.

In addition to letting you watch and play, the One also connects to social networks and lets you browse the Web (which you?d never want to do on your TV, but I suppose it looks cool in a demo). While it?s not very attractive?it?s got a boxy, early-VCR aesthetic?it does solve some of the persistent problems with using a video game system as a set-top box. Unlike its predecessor, the Xbox 360, Microsoft says the One is silent, and it turns itself and your TV on instantly, with a single voice command.

Still, while Microsoft?s launch event was impressively bombastic, it left many questions unanswered. The company showed a flawless live demo onstage?the One never misinterpreted a spoken command?but I didn?t get an up-close look at a working device. (Microsoft promised to reveal more at the E3 video game conference next month.) The company was also cagey about how the One will interact with your crappy cable box. Unlike in Jobs? perfect system, the Xbox One won?t replace your box. It will let you switch channels by voice, and it will be able to layer its own content on top of what?s on TV. But as The Verge?s Nilay Patel points out, the One likely won?t act as a DVR that saves TV shows to its drive, and you will still likely have to interact with your set-top box?s clunky user-interface.

There also a couple of aspects of the Xbox One that gamers won?t like. First, the device won?t play Xbox 360 games, so if you want to go back to those titles, you?ll still have to keep that console around?in which case the One really isn?t the all-in-one system it promises to be. (The company says it couldn?t maintain backward compatibility because the new system has a different processing ?architecture.?) Also, when you put a new game into the One, the game is automatically installed on your hard drive, meaning that you don?t have to keep inserting the disc when you want to play. This sounds nice, but there?s one catch: If you want to install the game on another Xbox One?that is, if you sell your game?you?ll have to pay a fee to do so, as Microsoft told Wired in a statement. (The company didn?t specify the fee, and it didn?t say whether you could play the used game from the disc without ?installing? it to the One?s hard drive.) On the other hand, Microsoft did quash rumors that the One would need a constant connection to the Internet?you can play single-player games without connecting, it says.

More unknowns: the One?s price and release date. Microsoft said the One would come out ?later this year,? though I?m guessing that doesn?t mean tomorrow. It gave no hint on pricing. When it released the Xbox 360 in 2005, that device started at $299, and it now sells for as little as $179.

I suspect the company won?t charge more than $399 for it. Indeed, I think it?d be crazy if it does. That?s because Microsoft?s best chance at making the One a truly perfect living-room device is to sell a whole lot of them very quickly. If it achieves this ubiquity, it could encourage cable and satellite companies to create apps for the Xbox. These apps would essentially turn your cable box into software that lives on your Xbox?you?d be able to get your recorded shows, on-demand content, and maybe even live TV without interacting with a physical device from your cable or satellite provider. (Last year, Comcast created just such an app for the Xbox 360; if the Xbox One gains a huge market share, other cable providers might decide to jump in, too.)

The other reason I?m hoping for a low price is that Microsoft needs to make the most of its head start. The One isn?t perfect, but it might be the closest thing we?ve seen, so far, to the living-room computer of our dreams. Microsoft needs to get it out to as many people as possible before Apple and Google create similar devices. There?s Sony, too, whose upcoming PlayStation 4 is staking out a similar gaming-plus-media-device niche?though Sony?s device looks far less intuitive than Microsoft?s. (Nintendo, meanwhile, looks out of the game at this point; its Wii U has been a flop.) What?s more, the opportunity is huge. Americans watch TV more often than they do nearly anything else, and when they?re not watching TV, they?re often playing games. The Xbox One is the first device I?ve seen to bridge these two activities in a way that isn?t clunky. If Microsoft can own that overall experience, the giant of the American tech scene could reawaken.

Michael C. Hall home in Los Angeles' Los Feliz district

By Catherine Sherman

After living in a home designed by famed Los Angeles architect Hal Levitt, Michael C. Hall's real estate bar must be set high. The actor's latest purchase -- a beautifully restored 1923 Spanish colonial home -- has an upscale kitchen, media room, guest house and green hillside views from almost every window.

Michael C. HallThe "Dexter" star (pictured left) purchased the six-bedroom, six-bath home in L.A.'s Los Feliz neighborhood for $3.825 million, according to property records. It's significantly bigger than Hall's former Hollywood Hills home, which he sold in August 2012 for $1.83 million.

Hall has earned a Golden Globe for his role as Dexter Morgan, a forensic analyst and serial killer, on the hit Showtime drama series, which is set to air its eighth and final season this summer. He's also known for playing David Fisher on "Six Feet Under" in the early 2000s.

Now the actor can look forward to a master suite with wood-beamed ceilings, a private sitting room, view of downtown L.A. and luxurious master bath. A large swimming pool in the backyard with white, plush lounge chairs also provides a place to relax and entertain. The home last sold in May 2012 for $2.09 million. Hall closed the deal for less than the asking price of $3.927 million.

Wave of attacks kills at least 79 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A wave of attacks killed at least 79 people in Shiite and Sunni areas of Iraq on Monday, officials said, pushing the death toll over the past week to more than 200 and extending one of the most sustained bouts of sectarian violence the country has seen in years.

The bloodshed is still far shy of the pace, scale and brutality of the dark days of 2006-2007, when Sunni and Shiite militias carried out retaliatory attacks against each other in a cycle of violence that left the country awash in blood. Still, Monday's attacks, some of which hit markets and crowded bus stops during the morning rush hour, have heightened fears that the country could be turning back down the path toward civil war.

Sectarian tensions have been worsening since Iraq's minority Sunnis began protesting what they say is mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government. The mass demonstrations, which began in December, have largely been peaceful, but the number of attacks rose sharply after a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq on April 23.

Iraq's Shiite majority, which was oppressed under the late dictator Saddam Hussein, now holds the levers of power in the country. Wishing to rebuild the nation rather than revert to open warfare, they have largely restrained their militias over the past five years or so as Sunni extremist groups such as al-Qaida have targeted them with occasional large-scale attacks.

But the renewed violence in both Shiite and Sunni areas since late last month has fueled concerns of a return to sectarian warfare. Since last Wednesday alone, at least 224 people have been killed in attacks, according to an AP count.

The worst of Monday's violence took place in Baghdad, where ten car bombs ripped through open-air markets and other areas of Shiite neighborhoods, killing at least 47 people and wounding more than 150, police officials said. In the bloodiest attack, a parked car bomb blew up in a busy market in the northern Shiite neighborhood of Shaab, killing 14 and wounding 24, police and health officials said.

WARNING: This video, shot by a local journalist in Basra, contains graphic images

The surge in bloodshed has exasperated Iraqis, who have lived for years with the fear and uncertainty bred of random violence.

"How long do we have to continue living like this, with all the lies from the government?" asked 23-year-old Baghdad resident Malik Ibrahim. "Whenever they say they have reached a solution, the bombings come back stronger than before."

"We're fed up with them and we can't tolerate this anymore," he added.

The predominantly Shiite city of Basra in southern Iraq was also hit Monday, with two car bombs there ? one outside a restaurant and another at the city's main bus station ? killing at least 13 and wounded 40, according to provincial police spokesman Col. Abdul-Karim al-Zaidi and the head of city's health directorate, Riadh Abdul-Amir.

In the town of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded next to a bus carrying Iranian pilgrims, killing six Iranians and one Iraq and wounding nine people, a police officer said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, but the fact that they all occurred in Shiite areas raised the suspicion that Sunni militants were involved. Also, Sunni insurgents, particularly al-Qaida in Iraq, are known to employ such large-scale bombings bear.

Monday's violence also struck Sunni areas, hitting the city of Samarra north of Baghdad and the western province of Anbar, a Sunni stronghold and the birthplace of the protest movement.

A parked car bomb in Samarra went off near a gathering of pro-government Sunni militia who were waiting outside a military base to receive salaries, killing three and wounding 13, while in Anbar gunmen ambushed two police patrols near the town of Haditha, killing eight policemen, police and army officials said.

Also in Anbar, authorities found 13 dead bodies in a remote desert area, officials said. The bodies, which included eight policemen who were kidnapped by gunmen on Friday, had been killed with a gunshot to the head.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Allosaurus fed more like a falcon than a crocodile: Engineering, anatomy work reveals differences in dinosaur feeding styles

May 21, 2013 ? The mighty T. rex may have thrashed its massive head from side to side to dismember prey, but a new study shows that its smaller cousin Allosaurus was a more dexterous hunter and tugged at prey more like a modern-day falcon.

"Apparently one size doesn't fit all when it comes to dinosaur feeding styles," said Ohio University paleontologist Eric Snively, lead author of the new study published today in Palaeontologia Electronica. "Many people think of Allosaurus as a smaller and earlier version of T. rex, but our engineering analyses show that they were very different predators."

Snively led a diverse team of Ohio University researchers, including experts in mechanical engineering, computer visualization and dinosaur anatomy. They started with a high-resolution cast of the five-foot-long skull plus neck of the 150-million-year-old predatory theropod dinosaur Allosaurus, one of the best known dinosaurs. They CT-scanned the bones at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, which produced digital data that the authors could manipulate in a computer.

Snively and mechanical engineer John Cotton applied a specialized engineering analysis borrowed from robotics called multibody dynamics. This allowed the scientists to run sophisticated simulations of the head and neck movements Allosaurus made when attacking prey, stripping flesh from a carcass or even just looking around.

"The engineering approach combines all the biological data?things like where the muscle forces attach and where the joints stop motion?into a single model. We can then simulate the physics and predict what Allosaurus was actually capable of doing," said Cotton, an assistant professor in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology.

To figure out how Allosaurus de-fleshed a Stegosaurus, the team had to "re-flesh" Allosaurus. The anatomical structure of modern-day dinosaur relatives, such as birds and crocodilians, combined with tell-tale clues on the dinosaur bones, allowed Snively and anatomists Lawrence Witmer and Ryan Ridgely to build in neck and jaw muscles, air sinuses, the windpipe and other soft tissues into their Allosaurus 3D computer model.

"Dinosaur bones simply aren't enough," said Witmer, Chang Professor of Paleontology in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and principal investigator on the National Science Foundation's Visible Interactive Dinosaur Project that provided funding for this research. "We need to know about the other tissues that bring the skeleton to life."

A key finding was an unusually placed neck muscle called longissimus capitis superficialis. In most predatory dinosaurs, such as T. rex, which Snively studied previously, this muscle passed from the side of the neck to a bony wing on the outer back corners of the skull.

"This neck muscle acts like a rider pulling on the reins of a horse's bridle," explained Snively. "If the muscle on one side contracts, it would turn the head in that direction, but if the muscles on both sides pull, it pulls the head straight back."

But the analysis of Allosaurus revealed that the longissimus muscle attached much lower on the skull, which, according to the engineering analyses, would have caused "head ventroflexion followed by retraction."

"Allosaurus was uniquely equipped to drive its head down into prey, hold it there, and then pull the head straight up and back with the neck and body, tearing flesh from the carcass ? kind of like how a power shovel or backhoe rips into the ground," Snively said.

In the animal world, this same de-fleshing technique is used by small falcons, such as kestrels. Tyrannosaurs like T. rex, on the other hand, were engineered to use a grab-and-shake technique to tear off hunks of flesh, more like a crocodile.

But the team's engineering analyses revealed a cost to T. rex's feeding style: high rotational inertia. That large bony and toothy skull perched at the end of the neck made it hard for T. rex to speed up or slow down its head or to change its course as it swung its head around.

Allosaurus, however, had a relatively very light head, which the team discovered as they restored the soft tissues and air sinuses.

Having a lot of mass sitting far away from the axis of head turning, as in T. rex, increases rotational inertia, whereas having a lighter head, as in Allosaurus, decreases rotational inertia, the researchers explained. An ice skater spins faster and faster as she tucks her arms and legs into her body, decreasing her rotational inertia as the mass of her limbs moves closer to the axis of spinning.

"Allosaurus, with its lighter head and neck, was like a skater who starts spinning with her arms tucked in," said Snively, "whereas T. rex, with its massive head and neck and heavy teeth out front, was more like the skater with her arms fully extended ? and holding bowling balls in her hands. She and the T. rex need a lot more muscle force to get going."

The end result is that Allosaurus was a much more flexible hunter that could move its head and neck around relatively rapidly and with considerable control. That control, however, came at the cost of brute-force power, requiring a de-fleshing style that, like a falcon, recruited the whole neck and body to strip flesh from the bones.

The Ohio University team will continue to use their engineering approach to explore additional differences in dinosaur feeding styles.

Militiamen attack gas complex in western Libya

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? A Libyan gas company official says militiamen have attacked a natural gas complex in the country's west, injuring two guards and stealing weapons and military vehicles.

The official says the attack took place early Monday and targeted the Mellitah Oil and Gas complex near Zwara, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) from the capital, Tripoli. The complex is a joint venture between Libya's National Oil Corp. and Italy's largest energy company, Eni SpA. The militiamen fled the site briefly after seizing weapons and equipment from the guards.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

A military official told Libya's official news agency that military helicopters are searching for the attackers.

Over a year after toppling Moammar Gadhafi's regime, Libya is plagued by lawlessness.

Spokesman for Ansar Dine arrested in Mauritania

NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) ? The man who acted as the spokesman for one of the three al-Qaida-linked groups occupying northern Mali turned himself in over the weekend to Mauritanian authorities on the border, an intelligence official briefed on the matter confirmed on Monday.

Sanda Ould Boumana, the Timbuktu-based spokesman for Ansar Dine, is being transferred to Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott. The official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, said that Ould Boumana had previously tried to negotiate a deal with Algeria, which also borders Mali.

"Ould Boumana said that he wishes to be arrested and tried in Mauritania," said the intelligence agent. "He will be transferred to Nouakchott to be interrogated by our specialists on terrorism."

Ansar Dine, or "Defenders of the Faith," invaded northern Mali in the last days of March 2012. The group's leader, Iyad Ag Ghali, is a native of Kidal, the northernmost provincial capital in Mali which became Ansar Dine's fief after the fall of the north to the extremists. In conjunction with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, Ansar Dine also occupied the storied city of Timbuktu ? Ould Boumana's hometown. He became Ansar Dine's spokesman and de facto leader in Timbuktu, and residents say that they often saw him going to meetings alongside the al-Qaida cell leaders. He was closely involved in imposing Shariah rule on Timbuktu, including overseeing the public amputation of an accused thief.

Ould Boumana fled the city in January, as French commandos advanced to end the extremists' control of the town.

In recent weeks, the Mauritanian news portal, Nouakchott Information Agency, a site that is frequently used by local jihadists to communicate with the outside world, reported that they had spoken to Ould Boumana and that he was pleading for asylum in Algeria.

Hollywood producer: Independence would boost ... - News - STV

An independent Scotland would be 'more competitive' on the global stage, according to a Glasgow-born Hollywood producer.

Producer Iain Smith, whose film credits include Cold Mountain and Entrapment, spoke out as the Scottish Government prepares to publish a paper on the economics of independence next week.

He said: "With all the attributes that Scotland enjoys, there are few countries that should be more confident about their economic potential than Scotland.

"Scotland's creative industries in particular have a great story to tell and a bright future. They already contribute hugely to the Scottish economy but there is plenty of room for growth, particularly in the export sector.

"With greater fiscal levers at its disposal, Scotland would be even more competitive on the world stage and able to promote its talent, crafts and services internationally for the economic and cultural benefit of the country.

"In this way Scotland would be equipped to make the most of its comparative advantages, particularly in areas like film and television, games and animation, all of which would boost jobs, raise skill levels and promote new talent."

Mr Smith was joined by chef Roy Brett, of Edinburgh's award-winning Ondine restaurant, and events expert Professor Joe Goldblatt in arguing that Scotland needs to have the range of economic powers independence would bring.

Mr Brett said: "We need to be able to decide our own priorities and solutions to the challenges around us. From restaurant VAT to fishing policy, too many decisions are out of our hands. We have to take control of our own destiny and bring decision making closer to home, with a government right here in Scotland fighting our corner. Not one 400 miles away, totally out of touch."

Prof Goldblatt, founding president of the International Special Events Society, also argued for independence, claiming Scotland would "benefit significantly" from leaving the UK.

"I am confident that as an independent nation, Scotland will soon become one of the most successful tourism destinations in the world," he said.

"This increased international visitation will foster further economic growth as international visitors see the potential for starting or relocating their businesses to Scotland.

"Therefore, in my professional opinion, an independent Scotland will become a stronger and more sustainable economic engine through future tourism investment and that is why I unreservedly support independence for one of the future tourism capitals of the world."

The Scottish Government paper will examine sectors of the economy such as life sciences, food and drink, creative industries, tourism and renewable energy.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "Everyone in Scotland should have the confidence in our economy to know we can be a successful independent country.

"In the coming weeks Scotland's economic strengths, the abilities of our people, our natural resources and the opportunities Scotland can take with independence will be set out for all to see, against the economic failures of Westminster that are holding us back.

"Over the last five years the strength of Scotland's economy has ensured that as an independent nation, we would be better off to the tune of ?12.6bn.

"Everyone knows we have a strong offshore oil and gas industry but Scotland is so much more than that. Our food and drink sector is booming, with a turnover of ?12bn last year. Our manufacturing industry exported over ?14bn-worth of goods and in creative industries, life sciences, tourism and new areas like the low-carbon economy, our talent and innovation can deliver real success."

Ways To Fight Off That Aching Pain In Your Back ? Hot Article Depot

Having consistent back pain can have an effect on many aspects of your life. It may put an end to exercising or from enjoying many daily activities. If you experience back pain, read through this article to discover some ways to improve your situation.

Avoid back pain by making sure your mattress is not too soft. It is generally agreed that very soft mattresses are not good for backs. But mattresses that are excessively firm will cause painful pressure points, so you must find your happy medium between the two. It is highly likely that you will need to visit a variety of stores, testing out various brands, and sizes, of mattresses to find the right one for you.

Water therapy might be efficient in healing your back pains. When you are in the water, the pressure and strain your spine and back muscles are subjected to is considerably lessened. In addition, water can help restore some of the range of motion your back problems have caused you to lose. There are a lot of community recreation centers that offer water therapy for a reasonable price.

If you?ve tried all known back pain relief methods to no avail, it may be time to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor. The chiropractor will take x-rays, and you can then discuss how to go about treating it. With these gentle adjustments, you can ease your pain.

For those suffering with back pain, receiving a massage is a good way to relieve it. Touch therapy can really help people with back pain. A good massage will loosen up your back muscles that are tight, giving you a nice feeling of relaxation and a relief from pain. You should aim to get a massage a minimum of once per week to help you manage your back pain.

Is back pain a part of your daily life? If so, do not twist your back too much as you go about your day. Regardless of what you are doing, twisting your body can seriously damage your back and leave you in pain. If you are active in various sporting activities, make sure to notice how your spine?s movements react. If you experience tightness or pain, slow down whatever activity in which you are engaged.

Give up smoking! Someone who smokes has 30% more chances of getting back pains. Smoking constricts blood vessels and reduces blood circulation. This stops necessary nutrients from accessing the lower portion of the spine and the discs, which makes them become brittle and apt to be injured.

Relaxing is probably considered one of the better remedies for back pain. Also, doing something as easy as the right breathing technique could really help someone suffering from pain. Using controlled breathing exercises can significantly reduce the pain and the stress that may be causing it. For instance, breathing deeply should take most of the pain away.

The Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against WomenThe Beauty Myth: How Images of Beauty Are Used Against Women

The bestselling classic that redefined our view od the relationship between beauty and female identity.

In today's world, women have more power, legal recognition, and professional success than ever before. Alongside the evident progress of the women's movement, however, writer and journalist Naomi Wolf is troubled by a different kind of social control, which, she argues, may prove just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty."

Every day at Lifehacker, we share with you tips on how you can work or live better using stuff you probably have just lying in front of you. But like our compatriots at Gawker, we've decided to make a definitive list that tells you which of those things is the best.

First, a few rules to explain a few of the things that didn't make the list: Nothing that plugs in to something else. Nothing that's meant for human consumption. And finally, nothing that's supposed to be "fun:" bobbleheads, action figures, and their ilk have been excluded. Besides, you can have plenty of fun with this stuff here. Just ask around.

Streetlight Manifesto: Ungrateful

Streetlight Manifesto's new record, The Hands That Thieve, is an instant classic in the ever-shrinking world of really stellar ska music simply by virtue of being a Streetlight Manifesto album. But what "Ungrateful" brings to the table is something a little subtler; it's a great Catch 22 song.

"Ungrateful" harkens back to the spring of 1998 with a sort of alarming intensity. Its earnestly self-defeated lyrics contrasted against an utterly triumphant melody?mandatory shout-chorus included?check off all the most important of boxes on the ska-checklist. It's a delightfully pared-down ditty on an album otherwise filled with more characteristically (and characteristically awesome) Streetlight songs.

But basically what I am trying to say here is that this is a good song; listen to it. And if you're a fan, the rest of the album is fantastically catchy too. Check it out and you'll be glad you did. [Spotify, Amazon, iTunes]

Noshing review: Boston Tea Party - The Birmingham Press

Our Tammy has been out sampling the fare in Birmingham once more. She brings news of an independent in the heart of the city.

By Tammy Facey.

Boston Tea Party Birmingham

There?s a newbie in town, at the top of Corporation Street, that?s been creating a buzz amongst the other Brum caf??s. When you walk in the smiling staff are mostly young but don?t let that put you off; they know their stuff.? Boston Tea Party (BTP), are South Western folk; Bristol, Exeter, Cirencester, and purveyors of a fine caf? experience. Though they hail from the West Country they are slowly but surely growing their organic brand to bring a fresh approach to breakfast, brunch and lunch to other regions of the UK that have yet to experience the delights of a West Country caf?.

Now, before you shake your head and look dubiously about you, BTP are not farmers with straw in their mouths, but they do have a (adorable) Cornish twang that is terribly twee in the Midlands. Unaccustomed to such charm I met the rather darling MD Sam and head of marketing Ben Hibbard who gave me the low down on BTP and why they?re sticking around.

They like to invest in buildings with character; the venue is fundamental to the BTP vibe, the environment is a chilled and interesting space and they want to keep it as an informal place to relax.

Note ? they are a chain, they?re definitely independents, but they?re not so small that they have yet to branch out into other sites. BTP are doing pretty damn well.? Sam points out, however, they?re not a ?conveyor belt? of a caf? where customers enter, you serve them and shout ?next? to the person waiting; it?s not like that. The service is informal and the staff establish relationships with their customers.

BTP have twelve caf??s in total; most of which don?t feel like they?re in a chain, possibly because they?re all different. Each cafe is slightly different (in terms of d?cor and art work), but they?re recognisable because of their running theme of simplicity, superb quality food and lovely members of staff.

Boston Tea Party Birmingham BrowniesThe chalkboard menu on the back wall above the bar is where you?ll find the extensive breakfast list. I have no qualms about breakfast being served all day, especially if it?s done well. Needless to say I ordered, my favourite, Eggs Benedict. Simple, classic, and delicious. It might seem an easy breakfast option, but getting that hollandaise sauce just right is a toughie, many make it too runny, too thick, or under-seasoned. This was a little on the rich side, but still tasty and the sauce made the eggs sing.

They change the menu every six months (like any good restaurant), and their current menu has had a recent shake up. The Chorizo new potato, warm salad has been tweaked in response to customer requests. The Super duper salad is a summer newbie of sweet potato salad and feta.

Drinks-wise they?ll whip you up a smoothie or you can find fresh juices in the fridge. If you?re in the mood for a hot beverage, however, they serve loose leaf tea because it ?makes sense?. Sam stressed that BTP is about people educating customer?s palettes. Canton tea provide them with seasonally fresh tea leaves and they serve coffee which is a mix of three blends; Brazilian, Columbian, with an acidic chocolate terra topnote.

All dietary requirements are catered for too. Try the gluten free and vegan cakes, which are just as delicious as the non-GF and non-vegan bakes.

If you?re broke and you only have a bit of change on you here?s what ?2.50 will buy: Flat sandwiches, any cake, filled croissants or their infamous bacon and egg tarts. And if money isn?t a problem they recommend the bacon pulled pork wrap or the West-Country breakfast.

Boston Tea Party Birmingham eggs royaleConsidering the city location BTP is the good value for money in relation to the quality of goods on offer. The eggs are free range, everything is made from scratch on-site and you really can?t get the quality and service cheaper. The MD also quipped they have an ?emotional viewpoint? about their customers and welcome an eclectic mix of people.

What really stuck with me though is that BTP listen to their customers: if a significant amount of people make a suggestion about the menu, the recipe will be changed within days. The caf? itself has a cool, bohemian vibe and is spacious enough for a large group of mates, yummy mummies with prams, and a bunch of office folk who flock there in that pre-work scramble when they?re desperate for a coffee at 8am.

As their marketing manager, Ben, puts it BTP is ?like going to a friend?s house; it?s about the people, good food and drink?

Human disease leptospirosis identified in new species, the banded mongoose, in Africa

Human disease leptospirosis identified in new species, the banded mongoose, in Africa

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

The newest public health threat in Africa, scientists have found, is coming from a previously unknown source: the banded mongoose.

Leptospirosis, the disease is called. And the banded mongoose carries it.

Leptospirosis is the world's most common illness transmitted to humans by animals. It's a two-phase disease that begins with flu-like symptoms. If untreated, it can cause meningitis, liver damage, pulmonary hemorrhage, renal failure and death.

"The problem in Botswana and much of Africa is that leptospirosis may remain unidentified in animal populations but contribute to human disease, possibly misdiagnosed as other diseases such as malaria," said disease ecologist Kathleen Alexander of Virginia Tech.

With a grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Coupled Natural and Human Systems Program, Alexander and colleagues found that the banded mongoose in Botswana is infected with Leptospira interrogans, the pathogen that causes leptospirosis.

Coupled Natural and Human Systems is part of NSF's Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability investment and is supported by NSF's Directorates for Biological Sciences; Geosciences; and Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences.

"The transmission of infectious diseases from wildlife to humans represents a serious and growing public health risk due to increasing contact between humans and animals," said Alan Tessier, program director in NSF's Division of Environmental Biology. "This study identified an important new avenue for the spread of leptospirosis."

The results are published today in a paper in the journal Zoonoses and Public Health. The paper was co-authored by Alexander, Sarah Jobbins and Claire Sanderson of Virginia Tech.

The banded mongoose, although wild, lives in close proximity to humans, sharing scarce water resources and scavenging in human waste.

The disease-causing pathogen it carries can pass to humans through soil or water contaminated with infected urine.

Mongoose and other species are consumed as bushmeat, which may also contribute to leptospirosis exposure and infection in humans.

"I was convinced that we were going to find Leptospira interrogans in some species in the ecosystem," said Alexander.

"The pathogen had not been reported previously in Botswana, with the exception of one cow more than a quarter of a century ago.

"We looked at public health records dating back to 1974 and there were no records of any human cases of leptospirosis. Doctors said they were not expecting to see the disease in patients. They were not aware that the pathogen occurred in the country."

Alexander conducted a long-term study of human, wildlife and environmental health in the Chobe District of Northern Botswana, an area that includes the Chobe National Park, forest reserves and surrounding villages.

"This pathogen can infect many animals, both wild and domestic, including dogs," said Jobbins. "Banded mongoose is likely not the only species infected."

The researchers worked to understand how people, animals and the environment are connected, including the potential for diseases to move between humans and wildlife.

"Diseases such as leptospirosis that have been around for a very long time are often overlooked amid the hunt for the next newly emerging disease," Alexander said.

Leptospirosis was first described in 1886, said Jobbins, "but we still know little about its occurrence in Africa."

With the new identification of leptospirosis in Botswana, Alexander is concerned about the public health threat it may pose to the immunocompromised population there. Some 25 percent of 15- to 49-year-olds are HIV positive.

"In much of Africa, people die without a cause being determined," she said.

"Leptospirosis is likely affecting human populations in this region. But without knowledge that the organism is present in the environment, overburdened public health officials are unlikely to identify clinical cases in humans, particularly if the supporting diagnostics are not easily accessible."

The researchers looked for Leptospira interrogans in archived kidneys collected from banded mongoose that had been found dead from a variety of causes. Of the sampled mongoose, 43 percent tested positive for the pathogen.

"Given this high prevalence in the mongoose, we believe that Botswana possesses an as-yet-unidentified burden of human leptospirosis," said Jobbins.

"There is an urgent need to look for this disease in people who have clinical signs consistent with infection."

Because banded mongoose have an extended range across sub-Saharan Africa, the results have important implications for public health beyond Botswana.

"Investigating exposure in other wildlife, and assessing what species act as carriers, is essential for improving our understanding of human, wildlife, and domestic animal risk of leptospirosis in this ecosystem," the scientists write in their paper.

The paper also cites predictions that the region will become more arid, concentrating humans and animals around limited water supplies and increasing the potential for disease transmission.

"Infectious diseases, particularly those that can be transmitted from animals, often occur where people are more vulnerable to environmental change and have less access to public health services," said Alexander.

"That's particularly true in Africa. While we're concerned about emerging diseases that might threaten public health--the next new pandemic--we need to be careful that we don't drop the ball and stop pursuing important diseases like leptospirosis."

Alexander is working to identify immediate research and management actions--in particular, alerting frontline medical practitioners and public health officials to the potential for leptospirosis in humans.

Cambodia Building Collapse: Shoe Factory Accident Kills 2, Injures 6 In Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ? The ceiling of a Cambodian factory that makes Asics sneakers collapsed on workers early Thursday, killing two people and injuring seven, in the latest accident to spotlight lax safety conditions in the global garment industry.

About 50 workers were inside the factory south of Phnom Penh, the capital, when the ceiling caved in, said police officer Khem Pannara. He said heavy iron equipment stored on the floor above appeared to have caused the collapse.

Two bodies were pulled from the wreckage and seven people were injured, he said. Rescuers combed through rubble for several hours and after clearing the site said that nobody else was trapped inside.

At a clinic where she was being treated for her injuries, worker Kong Thary cried on the telephone as she recounted the collapse.

"We were working normally and suddenly several pieces of brick and iron started falling on us," the 25-year-old said.

An initial investigation showed the ceiling that collapsed was poorly built and lacked the proper building materials to support heavy weight, said Ou Sam Oun, governor of Kampong Speu province, where the factory was located.

Chea Muny, chief of a trade union for factory workers, identified the factory as a Taiwanese-owned operation called Wing Star that produces sneakers for Asics, a Japanese sportswear label. He said shoes made at the factory were imported to the United States and Europe.

An Asics spokeswoman in Tokyo confirmed the factory was in contract to make Asics running shoes. She said Asics was trying to determine what happened.

"We understand that some people have died, so first we offer our condolences," said spokeswoman Masayo Hasegawa in Tokyo. She said she did not have information on the last time the building structure had been inspected but added, "We want the highest priority to be placed on saving lives."

The factory complex, which opened about a year ago, consists of several buildings and employs about 7,000 people, said Pannara, the police officer. The structure where the collapse occurred was mainly used as a storage warehouse for shoe-production equipment but had a small work area for about two dozen people, Chea Muny said.

The garment industry is Cambodia's biggest export earner, employing about 500,000 people in more than 500 garment and shoe factories. In 2012, the southeast Asian country shipped more than $4 billion worth of products to the United States and Europe.

The accident comes about three weeks after a building collapse in Bangladesh killed 1,127 people in the global garment industry's deadliest disaster.

"This shows that the problem is not only isolated to Bangladesh, and that companies (elsewhere) are trying to drive prices down by taking shortcuts on workers' safety," said Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch.

Last month, the U.N.'s labor office released a report that called for "urgent attention" to worker safety violations in the Cambodian garment and footwear industry.

The report by the International Labor Organization found "a worrying increase in fire safety violations," including that only 57 percent of factories kept paths free of obstructions. It reported "unacceptable" heat levels, abuse of overtime hours and a lack of worker access to drinking water.

Jurors in Arias case weigh death penalty option

FILE - In this May 8, 2013 file photo, Jodi Arias reacts at Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix after she was found of guilty of first-degree murder in the gruesome killing of her one-time boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in their suburban Phoenix home. Arias returns to an Arizona courtroom Wednesday, May 15, 2013 for the "aggravation" phase of her trial, during which jurors will determine whether the death penalty should be an option for sentencing her. (AP Photo/The Arizona Republic, Rob Schumacher, Pool, File)

(AP) ? Prosecutors on Wednesday tried to convince jurors that Jodi Arias should be eligible for the death penalty, saying Travis Alexander suffered tremendous pain as he fought for his life while Arias stabbed and slashed him nearly 30 times.

The trial resumed with a new phase to decide whether Arias should be eligible for the death penalty.

After about two hours of arguments and testimony, the same jurors who convicted Arias a week ago began deliberations to decide whether Alexander died an especially cruel, depraved and heinous death. If they agree that standard has been met, the penalty portion of the trial will begin to decide whether the 32-year-old Arias should get a life sentence or death.

Alexander's family sobbed in the front row as prosecutor Juan Martinez took the jury through the killing one more time. He described how blood gushed from Alexander's chest, hands and throat as he stood at the sink in his master bathroom and looked into the mirror with Arias behind him.

"The last thing he saw before he lapsed into unconsciousness ... was that blade coming to his throat," Martinez said. "And the last thing he felt before he left this earth was pain."

The "aggravation phase" of the trial played out in quick fashion, with only one prosecution witness and none for the defense. The most dramatic moments occurred when Martinez displayed photos of the bloody crime scene for the jury and paused in silence for two minutes to describe how long he said it took for Alexander to die at Arias' hands on June 4, 2008.

Arias, wearing a silky, cream-colored blouse, appeared to fight back tears most of the morning. She spent the weekend on suicide watch before being transferred back to an all-female jail where she will remain until sentencing.

"She made sure she killed him by stabbing him over and over and over again," Martinez said.

The defense didn't have much of a case given how many times Alexander was stabbed, the defensive wounds on his hands, the length of the attack, and the sheer amount of blood found at the scene. Defense lawyers said Alexander would have had so much adrenaline rushing through his body that he might not have felt much pain.

The only witness was the medical examiner who performed the autopsy and explained to jurors how Alexander did not die calmly and fought for his life as evidenced by the numerous defensive wounds on his body.

Minutes after her first-degree murder conviction last Wednesday, Arias granted an interview to Fox affiliate KSAZ, only adding to the circus-like environment surrounding the trial that has become a cable TV sensation with its graphic tales of sex, lies and violence.

"Longevity runs in my family, and I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place," a tearful Arias said. "I believe death is the ultimate freedom, and I'd rather have my freedom as soon as I can get it."

However, Arias cannot choose the death penalty. It's up to the jury to recommend a sentence.

If jurors find Arias' crime deserves consideration of the death penalty, the trial will move into the final phase. Prosecutors will call witnesses, including members of Alexander's family, aimed at convincing the panel she should face the ultimate punishment. Arias' attorneys will also call witnesses, likely members of her family, in an attempt to gain sympathy from jurors so they give her life in prison.

If the panel finds no aggravating factors exist, jurors will be dismissed and the judge will determine whether Arias should spend the rest of her life in prison or be sentenced to 25 years with the possibility of release.

Arias acknowledged killing Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home. She initially denied any involvement then later blamed masked intruders. Two years after her arrest, she said it was self-defense when the victim attacked her after a day of sex.

She stabbed and slashed Alexander nearly 30 times, shot him in the forehead and slit his throat from ear to ear, leaving the motivational speaker and businessman nearly decapitated before she dragged his mutilated body into his shower where friends found him about five days later.

Prosecutors said Arias planned the killing in a jealous rage, as Alexander wanted to end their affair and planned to take a trip to Mexico with another woman.

Testimony in her trial began in early January. The jury reached its verdict after about 15 hours of deliberations over four days. All 12 jurors, eight men and four women, unanimously agreed the killing was premeditated.

Bollywood star Bachchan hopes for Hollywood roles

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Bollywood's biggest star, Amitabh Bachchan, is willing to explore more Hollywood movies now that he's done his first.

Bachchan says he has never been offered Hollywood films before the 3-D extravaganza "The Great Gatsby," which opens the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The 71-year-old said that at his age, it is difficult to expect that certain roles will come his way. "But yes, if there are people who want to cast me, I don't mind if something is offered," the Hindustan Times newspaper quoted him as saying in an interview published Tuesday.

The Indian screen legend has acted in more than 180 Indian films in a career spanning four decades.

Bachchan portrays Meyer Wolfsheim in director Baz Luhrmann's take on the classic American novel.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Mcguire and Carey Mulligan.

Bluetooth 4.0 support comes to the Nexus 4, might be headed to stock Android too

LG Nexus 4 with Bluetooth 40 support shows up on Bluetooth SIG

The five month old LG Nexus 4 just showed up on the Bluetooth SIG for a second inspection. The SIG's site appears to be down right now, but TechTastic took a screen grab which lists the revised handset as supporting Bluetooth 4.0. This is interesting, because up until now the Android Open Source Project hasn't supported the lower power Bluetooth spec, meaning that the original Nexus 4 couldn't use it despite having the necessary hardware. Judging by the appearance of this SIG listing, Bluetooth 4.0 support for stock Android could be announced at I/O later today. Coincidentally (or not), HTC is due to give to give a talk at a local Android User Group tomorrow about Bluetooth Low Energy. Oh, and while we're on the subject of a potentially updated Nexus 4, there have been more sightings of a white version in Dubai (shown above). Ripe for another I/O giveaway?
