Edinburgh honour for Prof Higgs

Renowned physicist Peter Higgs has been honoured by the city which he has called home for half a century.
Professor Higgs, 82, emeritus professor of Physics at Edinburgh University, was given the Edinburgh Award 2011 at the City Chambers.
Edinburgh's Lord Provost presented him with an engraved Loving Cup, a traditional two handled drinking vessel which represents friendship.
The Higgs boson particle is named after Prof Higgs.
Prof Higgs is the fifth person to be honoured with the special award which recognises an outstanding contribution to the city.
Adopted homeThe scientist, who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, follows in the footsteps of writers Ian Rankin and JK Rowling, cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and judo expert George Kerr who have previously received the accolade.
Prof Higgs said: "It is a great honour to receive this award from the city that I fell in love with and is now my adopted home."
His work in the 1960s proposed the existence of a particle which came to be known as the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle.
It is an important component of the Standard Model of particle physics that helps explain how objects have mass.
The award comes following the announcement in December 2011 from scientists at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern) in Switzerland that two independent experiments at the Large Hadron Collider had seen "tantalising hints" of the existence of the Higgs boson.
Speaking to BBC Scotland ahead of receiving the award, Prof Higgs was modest about his achievements.
He said: "This is something I've lived with for a really long time. It's now nearly 48 years since I did this work in 1964.
"It was another 12 years before John Ellis at Cern suggested experimentalists started taking an interest, in what I had actually pointed out in an added paragraph to a paper, which, in its first version, had been rejected."

Dr Alan Walker, who worked with Prof Higgs at Edinburgh University, said it was a "very proud day" for both the university and the city.
He said: "We are very proud to have been colleagues of Peter for many years.
"This award is richly deserved, not only for the work that has led to worldwide acclaim, but for his inspiration of students, many of whom have gone on to do great things."

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) ? Johnson & Johnson's longtime CEO Bill Weldon is stepping down as the health care giant's top executive after an embarrassing string of recalls of everything from Tylenol to Benadryl that has cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars and consumers' trust.
The maker of Band-Aids and biotech drugs said Tuesday that Alex Gorsky, vice chairman and head of the company's largest business by revenue, will become CEO on April 26, the day of its annual shareholder's meeting. Weldon, who as CEO since 2002 helped the company grow through acquisitions and licensing deals, will remain chairman of the board for now.
The change at the top comes as the company struggles to regain its footing after more than two dozen product recalls since September 2009, for reasons from bacterial contamination to liquid medicines that may contain tiny glass or metal. While there haven't been reports of patients harmed by the recalled products, the sheer volume is likely unrivaled in the industry.
Congress has been probing J&J's handling of the recalls, including a "stealth recall" in 2008 in which the company paid a third party to quietly buy up packages of faulty medication from stores. Federal regulators have had three of J&J's factories under increased scrutiny for nearly two years, and one is being completely rebuilt.
J&J also faces lawsuits over the recalls, including one in which a family alleges its toddler died shortly after ingesting a "super dose" of Tylenol.
The recalls have hurt the company's financial performance. Under Weldon's tenure, J&J's revenue slightly more than doubled to $65 billion last year. But lost sales from all the recalled products not on store shelves have cost the company more than $1 billion. J&J shares plunged from nearly $72 in early 2009 to $48 after the recalls began and have been stuck in the mid-60s for about a year.
Weldon has repeatedly assured investors and consumers that he had the problems under control, only to have another recall pop up. Last April, for instance, he charmed shareholders with a pledge that brighter days were coming. But as recently as last week, J&J announced that it would recall about a half a million bottles of infant Tylenol because of complaints about bottle tops meant to make doses easier collapsing in some cases.
As the company worked to resolve the problems, several executives below Weldon departed suddenly. One was Colleen Goggins, the former head of the consumer health business, where many of the recalls originated.
A handful of analysts had been calling for Weldon's ouster, saying J&J had abandoned its highly touted corporate credo, displayed prominently at headquarters, that stresses responsibility to patients, doctors and nurses. Others said they thought the succession planning had long been in the works.
"While I am sure the board was not happy with the recalls that have plagued (J & J), I am not convinced Mr. Weldon was pushed out due to the latest recall," wrote Edward Jones analyst Linda Bannister.
The departure of Weldon, who has spent his entire 41-year career at J&J working his way up to chief executive, is being described by the company as normal succession planning. Weldon had repeatedly said he had no plans to leave unless asked to do so by the board of directors, which has long been loyal to him. But late Tuesday, Weldon, 63, said in a statement: "I look forward to the transition of leadership."
"The way I read it is, he wouldn't have left on his own if he didn't think the company was on its way to recovery," said Miller Tabak & Co. analyst and fund manager Les Funtleyder.
Gorsky and Sherri S. McCoy, who heads both the pharmaceutical and consumer businesses, had been considered the most likely successors to Weldon after both were named company vice chairmen in January 2011. McCoy will become vice chairman of the executive committee and report to Gorsky once he becomes CEO.
Gorsky leads the company's medical devices and diagnostics unit, which J&J claims is the largest business of its kind in the world. But besides that, he oversees 140 manufacturing facilities around the world. He's also in charge of both government affairs and policy, and the company's venture capital subsidiary, called the Johnson and Johnson Development Corp.
"I'm honored that the board has placed such confidence in me, and I am also aware of the serious responsibilities that come with this office," Gorsky, 51, said.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing expert Girish Malhotra said he considered the management shake-up at J&J an overdue firing of Weldon. But Malhotra wrote that the heads of manufacturing and accounting should also be fired, and the board dismissed.
"How a global icon of care and quality could not control its practices is just beyond imagination," he wrote. "I am not sure Mr. Alex Gorsky would be able to clean the house quickly to restore confidence in the company. Time will tell."

Crackers and Giggles, the Joker?s pets, have set up a candy and toy store to steal from all the kids of Gotham City.
Sleepy Time Crime, written by Sarah Hines Stephens, features the return of Super-Turtle! Lex Luthor?s iguana Ignatius is behind a plot to put pets to sleep with poisoned food, and Super-Turtle has to rescue Streaky the Super-Cat.

I?d always felt sad as a kid but I could live with it. Then when I got into my double digits it became a lot bigger because people in my family were dying, and so I thought that death was the reality of life. I thought that when you grow up, your loved ones die. Due to bad genes or bad luck, my family members died early and so I had to grow up too fast.
And the first clue I had to knowing that something was wrong with me was my level of functioning. It was so get up, go to school, face the day, face my parents, face the world. I thought all of the adults around me felt equally terrible but that there was something wrong with me because I let my terrible feelings take over. I wasn?t handling them right. I wasn?t a strong person, I was too sensitive.
Looking back I know that those feelings weren?t normal. They were a sign that there was something wrong in my life and in my brain chemistry. But as a kid, you think that your family is the world. That everyone else?s family is just like yours, or that they could be, if their relatives died.
I feel SO sad when I write this, and I feel angry. I think to myself that if I spend every day of the rest of my life trying to get the message across to kids and teens that they aren?t alone, and it gets through to one person, then my life, all this fighting, will be worth it. I never want to let myself forget how alone I felt growing up.
And then I think, well, what could anyone have done to help me, anyway? My parents were trying their best, and no one could magically stop my family members from dying. Being diagnosed with depression earlier might have helped me feel less alone but it wouldn?t have eased the pain much at all. I think I knew that deep down when I was eleven. I knew that we were all helpless little ants on a doomed planet.
I believe that every kid feels really fucking alone sometimes. Some feel more alone than others, but especially those of us who feel really deeply, that aloneness is part of our existence. But as a kid, that aloneness is so scary. When I think back to how much pain I was in at eleven, I cannot believe I got through it. Honest to God, I can?t believe I did.
So what helped? Waiting. Taking it day by day. And music.
See, my dad is really into music and as a kid he?d give me cassette tapes of bands he thought I?d like. I had Queen and Michael Jackson, and would listen to their music and stare out by bedroom window. Then my shitty little tape deck stopped working. I told my dad and he didn?t say anything really. I was disappointed.
Then one night after dinner my dad told me to go upstairs and pull down my blind in my bedroom window. I was in the middle of doing homework or something and was like, ?Why?? He told me again, strictly, to do it. So I stomped up the stairs feeling totally pissed off and opened my bedroom door to find the blind already down. What the??
Then I saw it. A brand new stereo was on my shelf. It was huge compared to my last one and it played CD?s. It wasn?t my birthday or anything, it was November, so nothing special was going on that would warrant presents. But there it was. And that changed everything for me.
Later my dad would confess to me that my mom was angry that he?d spent like $200 randomly on me so close to Christmas. But it was right when my aunt was dying and the timing could not have been better.
My dad was part of this music club where they?d send you a pamphlet of all the latest CD?s and if you bought like three from them over the year you got ten free. So I?d pick out bands I?d heard of or whose cover art I liked and my dad would give those free CD?s to me.
And so R.E.M. got me through. Our Lady Peace and Oasis. Sarah McLaughlin. I never felt safe enough to tell people just how alone I felt at that time, and I didn?t feel safe enough to cry. I was emotionally fucked but I had music, and so I?d put on my stereo and turn it up so loud that all of my feelings got a little quieter in comparison. And my parents never told me to turn my music down, ever. Not once.
So I guess my advice to you, if you?re one of those people who feel really alone and feel like no one can help you, is to find some sort of outlet for your feelings. Find music you love, find books and find sports or whatever your heart is drawn to and surround yourself in it. Fill up your days with your passions and if you do that, then the days will be easier to get through and the nights might not feel so dark. Keep doing what you love, dream about a better life, and just hang on until you feel safe enough to talk to someone.
And when you find the right person they will help you. You?ll still have your passions but then you?ll have a person or a network of people who can fill in those times when your passions can?t drown out your pain. And when those supportive people in your life can?t be with you for whatever reason, you?ll have your passions. Switch back and forth between the two, or better yet, keep faith that you?ll meet someone who not only understands you but loves the things that you love too.
When you feel alone, remember that human beings have felt deep horrifying pain for thousands of years. They found a way to cope by making music, making art, building castles and inventing the lightbulb. They used their pain and passions as fuel for the journey. They make great fuel.
