Multimillion-dollar verdict against RIM overturned

(AP) ? A U.S. judge has overturned a multimillion-dollar patent-infringement verdict against BlackBerry maker Research In Motion.

The judge determined that Mformation Technologies Inc., which makes software for managing mobile devices, failed to show that RIM infringed on a key patent in question.

A federal jury in San Francisco had awarded Mformation $147.2 million last month based on an infringement finding. The judge overseeing the case nullified the earlier decision Wednesday.

Mformation, of Edison, N.J., accused RIM in 2008 of infringing on its 1999 invention for remotely managing wireless devices. Mformation's software allows companies to remotely access employee cellphones to do software upgrades, change passwords or wipe data from phones that have been stolen.

Wednesday's decision was a small victory for RIM, a Canadian company that has been struggling with plummeting sales.

"We appreciate the Judge's careful consideration of this case. RIM did not infringe on Mformation's patent and we are pleased with this victory," Steve Zipperstein, RIM's chief legal officer, said in a statement Thursday.

The number of patent lawsuits in the technology sector has exploded in recent years. Apple and Samsung, for instance, are currently engaged in a high profile court dispute over the similarities between their smartphones and tablets.

"The purpose of the patent system is to encourage innovation, but the system is still too often exploited in pursuit of other goals," said Zipperstein. "Many policy makers have already recognized the need to address this problem and we call on others to join them as this case clearly highlights the significant need for continuing policy reform to help reduce the amount of resources wasted on unwarranted patent litigation."

In 2006, RIM. agreed to pay NTP $612.5 million to settle a four-year patent dispute. Though it never admitted wrongdoing, RIM acknowledged that customers had delayed placing new orders due to the threat of a court-ordered shutdown of BlackBerry service in the U.S.

Shares of RIM traded up 12 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $7.74 in early afternoon trading.

Mformation chief executive Todd DeLaughter said in a statement that the company is "deeply disappointed" that the judge would overturn a jury verdict after a month of trial and a week of deliberation by the jury.

"We steadfastly believe that RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server software product infringes Mformation's '917 patent and that courts will ultimately rule in our favor. We are assessing all legal options available to us and will determine the next steps shortly," he said.

Blasts in Aleppo, Damascus as US pushes for regime fall

Syrian forces shelled rebels in the battle-scarred city of Aleppo and blasts rocked Damascus, as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Saturday for the regime's downfall to be speeded up.

State television said two bombs exploded in the heart of the capital, including one in the central district of Marje that militants said was a blast caused by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by rebels at a security convoy.

Fighting also raged in the flashpoint central city of Homs where the army pounded several neighbourhoods and in Idlib in the northwest, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

The violence killed at least 83 people nationwide -- 37 civilians, 26 soldiers and 20 rebels -- the Britain-based watchdog said.

In the city of Aleppo "areas of Salaheddin district came under shelling by Syrian regime forces," who forced the rebels to stage what they termed a "tactical withdrawal" on Thursday, it added.

A rebel commander insisted his fighters were still putting up strong resistance around Salaheddin.

"Fierce fighting has continued without respite for the past 24 hours as the army tries to push us out of the neighbourhood," Abdel Qader Saleh told AFP by telephone.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground, later reported "intense and indiscriminate bombardment by aircraft flying over Sakhur and Hanano districts" of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital.

Troops backed by artillery stormed Salaheddin on Wednesday in the first stage of an offensive to recapture areas of the northern city taken by the rebels since July 20.

In the face of the escalating violence, Clinton said in Turkey the "number one goal" of Washington and Ankara was to hasten the end of President Bashar al-Assad's regime and stop the bloodshed.

"We are continuing to increase pressure from outside," she told reporters in Istanbul after meeting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Syrian opposition activists.

"Yesterday in Washington we announced sanctions designed to expose and disrupt the links between Iran, Hezbollah and Syria that prolong the life of the Assad regime."

Washington on Friday announced sanctions against Syrian state oil company Sytrol for trading with Iran, in a bid to starve both Tehran and Damascus of much-needed revenue.

The US Treasury also said it was adding the Iran- and Syria-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah to a blacklist of organisations targeted under Syria-related sanctions.

The move explicitly ties the group to the violence in Syria, where Assad is attempting to put down a 17-month revolt that has reportedly killed more than 21,000 people.

-- Arab ministers to meet on Syria --

--------------------------------------

But the violence raged on with blasts in Damascus that triggered panic among residents.

Official SANA news agency said "armed terrorists" blew up a bomb in Marje district and later "opened fire indiscriminately to terrorise civilians."

But a militant said "fighters of the (rebel) Free Syrian Army fired an RPG on a security convoy near Victoria Bridge" and later exchanged fire with government forces.

Videos uploaded by activists on the Internet showed panicked residents running in the streets and others blowing the horns of their cars to force traffic to move.

Fighting was also reported in Tadamun, another Damascus area, where there were "fierce clashes between the Free Syrian Army and the regime forces," said the Local Coordination Committees.

With the unrelenting violence, Arab foreign ministers are to hold emergency talks in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to discuss the conflict and a replacement for international mediator Kofi Annan, who quit in frustration over a failed peace plan.

World powers are expected to name veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi as the new UN-Arab League envoy for Syria early next week.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is pushing for a UN presence in Syria after its observer mission in the country expires on August 19 and has suggested options for an "effective and flexible presence," a diplomat said in New York on Saturday.

The mission was deployed in April to oversee a peace plan, which should have begun with a ceasefire that never took hold and in mid-June, the observers suspended patrols as fighting intensified.

The Security Council is to debate the future of the mission on Thursday.

On the humanitarian front, the United States, Canada pledged new funds for Syrian refugees who fled the violence in their country while France sent a cargo plane to Jordan with tonnes of aid for those forced to flee.

Clinton announced an additional $5.5 million in aid while in Turkey, while Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said his country was providing Jordan with $6.5 million to meet the needs of the refugees.

Turkey is currently home to some 55,000 refugees living in camps along the Syrian border and Jordan is hosting more than 150,000 Syrians.

In Lebanon, another neighbour where tensions have spilled over, the military prosecutor general accused Syrian security chief General Ali Mamluk and former Lebanese minister Michel Samaha of planning attacks.

A judicial source said they were "suspected of forming a group to provoke sectarian killings and terrorist acts using explosives, which were transported and stored by Michel Samaha."

Accused Colorado gunman applied to Illinois school with stellar grades, references

(Reuters) - The suspect in the Colorado movie house massacre that claimed 12 lives was once a gifted honors student who sought to "positively contribute to the world," according to newly released reference letters accompanying his application to an Illinois graduate program.

Materials submitted in 2010 by James Holmes, 24, in seeking admission to a neuroscience doctoral program at the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus were furnished to Reuters by the school on Friday under a state Freedom of Information Act request.

The package of academic records, along with his own application essay and glowing recommendations from several references, paint a picture of Holmes as a dedicated, if not eccentric, young scholar.

Holmes was admitted to the highly competitive program and was offered an annual $22,660 stipend, plus the waiver of all tuition and fees after he impressed University of Illinois faculty with his "truly outstanding" personal and professional qualities, according to a copy of his acceptance letter.

The only overtly bizarre element of the package was a photo submitted with his application that shows Holmes, wearing dark sunglasses and a black T-shirt, smiling slightly as he stands beside a live llama while holding out a piece of straw.

Members of the admission board jokingly referred to him as "llama" after seeing the picture, according email correspondence released by the university.

Acceptance letter: http://r.reuters.com/xad99s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Still, the materials give no hint of the man in body armor and bright orange-dyed hair who authorities say referred to himself as "the Joker" when arrested as a suspect in the July 20 shooting rampage at a multiplex in Aurora, Colorado, near Denver.

Holmes, who ended up briefly pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Colorado rather than Illinois, is accused of opening fire at a midnight screening of the new "Batman" film "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.

He has been charged with 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.

Holmes' University of Illinois application, in which he describes himself as an "aspiring scientist," also shows that the San Diego native was ranked among the top 1 percent of undergraduate honors students at the University of California at Riverside, where he earned a 3.94 grade-point-average, out of a 4.0 scale, and a bachelor's degree in neuroscience.

"James is an extraordinarily gifted student who is very dedicated to his academic pursuits," one individual, whose name has been redacted, wrote in one of three reference letters obtained by Reuters. "He is passionate about a career in science and seeks out opportunities to learn as much as possible about his chosen field of interest, and how he can positively contribute to the world."

In his own personal essay, Holmes wrote: "Rational people act based on incentives for self-fulfillment, including fulfilling needs of self-development and needs of feeling useful and helpful to others."

He continued: "I have always been fascinated by the complexities of a long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness. These fascinations likely stemmed from my interest in puzzles and paradoxes as an adolescent."

Some of the application materials were first published by the Illinois newspaper the News-Gazette, which obtained them under an earlier freedom of information request and posted them online.

While accepted to the Illinois program, Holmes opted to pursue a neuroscience graduate degree at the University of Colorado. He dropped out of that program one year later, weeks before he is accused of unleashing the mass shooting and booby-trapping his apartment with explosives.

Holmes' defense lawyer said on Thursday during a court appearance that his client suffers from a mental illness and tried to get help before the shooting.

Court papers filed by defense attorneys two weeks ago said Holmes had been a patient of the medical director for student mental health services on campus before he filed paperwork to drop out of the competitive graduate program in Aurora, Colorado.

That psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, reported Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer over concerns about her patient, according to media reports

Lawyers for Fenton and the campus police officer have declined to comment to Reuters on those reports. The university also has declined to comment on the reports but said it had hired a former federal prosecutor to probe its dealings with Holmes.

As in many states, mental health care providers in Colorado must warn authorities of potential violent behavior only when a patient has communicated a serious threat of imminent physical violence against a specific target.

Holmes is being held without bond and in solitary confinement at the Arapahoe County jail near Denver.

Olympic wrestling: Russia's Otarsultanov lands controversial gold

London, Aug 11

Russia's double European champion Dzhamal Otarsultanov won the Olympic gold in the 55 kg category of the freestyle wrestling tournament Friday.

Otarsultanov was made to fight all the way by Georgia's Vladimer Khinchegashvili, who landed what would have been a gold medal-winning point a split second after the bout had ended.

Khinchegashvili's coach had an appeal turned down, costing his wrestler a point that made sure Otarsultanov clinched the gold.

It is Russia's fourth wrestling gold at the 2012 Olympics.

Khinchegashvili's silver was Georgia's fourth medal.

Shinichi Yumoto took the bronze for Japan in the freestyle wrestling's 55 kg category Friday.

Yumoto beat Bulgaria's Radoslav Marinov Velikov in two rounds even though both scored two points each.

Wrestling rules stipulate that the athlete to score last in each round takes it.

Yumoto's twin brother Kenichi took bronze in the 60 kg category in Beijing 2008.

North Korea's Yang Kyong Il took the category's other bronze earlier Friday.

Tori Spelling: Proud of Baby Bump, Defending Bikini Pics

Tori Spelling knows a thing or four about being pregnant. She's expecting her fourth child later this year.

And the actress has no shame showing off her figure, even when it's expanded in size and even when others take issue with her exposed bump, as has been the cast over the years when she dons skimpy swimwear.

But now Spelling has taken to her blog and told off the critics.

Tori Spelling Baby Bump

"A few months back, I caught a lot of flack on two separate occasions for bearing my baby bump in a bikini and monokini while spending the day poolside with my family," the actress wrote, defending these decisions:

"I'm super proud of my bump. Why should I be embarrassed and cover up something that's the greatest gift a woman can experience? A pregnant woman in any shape or size is beautiful!"

Spelling also think she's setting a positive example for her son and two daughters.

"I'm making a conscious choice to show my daughters that they can express themselves and be proud as a woman of their bodies. I don't ever want them to think that they should be ashamed of or self-conscious of their bodies, no matter what shape it's in."

Do you agree? Do you have a problem with Spelling showing off her baby bump in a bikini?

(AP) ? A dime made in 1873 has cost someone a pretty penny: It sold for $1.6 million at auction.

An anonymous bidder won the pristine coin, said Chris Napolitano, president of Stack's Bowers Galleries, which auctioned it during an American Numismatic Association convention. With a 15 percent buyer's fee tacked on, the final price for the coin was $1.84 million, he said.

The rare coin was minted in Carson City, Nev., during a one-day run of dimes.

"Generally speaking, in the coin auction business, you might get a couple of people fighting each other" as they bid, he said Friday. "On this one, we had four or five buyers over a million dollars. We had a fair amount of buyers pursuing it."

The 1873-CC "No Arrows" Liberty Seated dime was auctioned Thursday night. It's part of the Battle Born Collection, which contained one of every coin struck in Carson City before the mint there closed in 1893.

All 111 pieces were auctioned off Thursday night, fetching a total of nearly $10 million.

Iran playing 'nefarious' role in Syria: Rice

The United States on Thursday accused Iran of playing a "nefarious" role in the Syria conflict, one that strengthens the case for President Bashar al-Assad to be forced out of office.

Susan Rice, US ambassador to the United Nations said the alliance of Iran, Lebanese Hezbollah and Assad's government -- a group that boasts of being the Middle East's "an axis of resistance" -- was "bad for the region."

Rice was speaking to NBC television shortly after Assad met a top Iranian envoy in his war-torn capital this week and as Tehran hosted a conference on the conflict designed to shore up the beleaguered Syrian regime.

"They view this as an axis of resistance along with Hezbollah, so there is no question that Iran is playing a nefarious role, not only in Syria but more broadly in the region, actively supporting the Assad regime," she said.

"One of the reasons why we are quite clear that the end result must be and will be the departure of Assad, is because this alliance, so to speak, is bad not only for Syria, but it is bad for the region and bad for our interests."

At its hastily-arranged international conference, Iran appealed to Syria's government and armed opposition to open peace talks.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told diplomats from Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Cuba, Venezuela and other nations that Iran opposes "any foreign interference and military intervention in resolving the Syrian crisis."

Rice said the United States was wary about imposing a Libya-style no fly zone over Syria even though it wanted to increase support for the opposition.

Some Syrian opposition rebels and US politicians have called for a no fly zone and Rice said "none of these potential options have been ruled out."

But she told NBC "the reality is that a no-fly zone isn't a simple proposition, it would ultimately involve putting boots on the ground and it would be a very different circumstance than we saw in Libya."

The US envoy said "the Syrian air defenses are among the most sophisticated in the world. Their military is quite a different beast."

Last year, United States, Britain and France led a coalition which patrolled a no-fly zone over Libya. The mission later escalated into a NATO-led bombing campaign in support of the rebels that eventually overthrew Moamer Kadhafi.

Russia, China and other UN Security Council countries say they were tricked into accepting the resolution which gave UN approval to the action.

Russia and China have blocked three Security Council resolutions which threatened or even hinted at sanctions against Assad's government.

Rice said the United States is "actively looking at ways to strengthen the opposition: materially and financially and substantively and politically and that is already beginning to show some progress on the ground."

The ambassador admitted that fighting between Assad's forces and rebels is intensifying but insisted the "momentum is shifting clearly in favor of the opposition."

"The defections are mounting, the economic pressure is mounting, the political isolation of the Assad is increasing," she said.

Medal-worthy travel mishaps abound

By Rob Lovitt, NBC News contributor

With the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics just days away, the last two weeks have given us scenes that celebrate human achievement at its highest: Gabby Douglas winning the women?s all-around gymnastic title. Usain Bolt running faster than any human ever has. Michael Phelps earning more Olympic hardware ? six medals this year alone, 22 since 2004 ? than most countries.

If only travelers could be as laudable. Instead, the last few weeks have given us a parade of people whose rude and/or stupid behavior can only be described as Olympian and who, therefore, deserve medals of their own.

Cue the ?Olympic Fanfare,? although the theme song from ?The Three Stooges? might be more appropriate:

Bronze
To achieve greatness, you have to have a bit of an outsized ego. How else to explain the Australian couple who refused to fly on a recent Qantas flight because the plane had run out of the plush pajamas that came standard with their first class seats? When business class jammies?wouldn't?do, they disembarked, notes the Herald Sun, causing the other 400 or so passengers to sit and wait while their luggage was also removed.

An Overhead Bin bronze medal and a set of Olympic-logo pajamas are on their way.

Silver
Since no Olympics is complete without?a drug scandal, we?re awarding the silver medal to Rogelio Mauricio Harris of Long Beach, Calif. According to the NY Daily News, Harris was busted at LAX last week for possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

Stupidity aside, you have to admire his creativity as he allegedly shaped the four pounds of meth into 45 small bars, coated them in a chocolate-like substance and sealed them up in Snickers wrappers. All we can say is it?s a good thing U.S. judoka Nick Delpopolo inadvertently ate some pot-laced baked goods?and not one of these babies.

Gold
Olympic-caliber athletes are noted for their Zen-like calm under intense pressure but for serene composure, it?s hard to top the Norwegian tourist who recently fell asleep on a baggage belt at Rome?s Fiumicino Airport.

As noted on TODAY.com, the man not only got a good nap but also a souvenir ? an X-ray of himself curled up in the fetal position, still clutching one of the many beers that prompted his trip in the first place.

TODAY's Natalie Morales explains how a tipsy tourist fell asleep on an airport luggage belt during a layover in Rome, which carried him to an X-ray machine that captured him clutching his beer.

And, finally, a nod to the folks at VietJet, a Vietnamese airline that was recently taken to task for putting on a show in which bikini-clad beauty queens shimmied their way down a plane?s aisle. The three-minute show earned the airline a fine, although the video suggests that passengers didn?t seem to mind.

Who knows: considering that the opening festivities in London included a sky-diving queen, multiple Mary Poppins and a whole lot of sick children bouncing on hospital beds, there may still be time to get them into Sunday?s closing ceremony.

Popular book is spurring talk about eroticism

BY RICHARD WATTS, TIMES -COLONIST

Family counsellor and sex therapist Jayne Weatherbe is planning a group discussion inspired by the popular Fifty Shades of Grey book series.

Whatever its literary merits, the eroticsexual novel Fifty Shades of Grey has successfully tapped a cache of neglected needs and emotions, a Victoria relationship counsellor says.
Victoria sex therapist and family counsellor Jayne Weatherbe says the bestselling novel by Briton E.L. James is now prompting women, particularly women older than their 20s, to begin talking and thinking about sexual relations in a way they have been overlooking ? romance with a hint of danger and mystery.
At the same time, however, Weatherbe credits the 2011 book, with its sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, for themes, characters and plots that stay within boundaries that are physically safe and even emotionally traditional.
?It?s a romantic fantasy,? Weatherbe said in an interview. ?It?s not too transgressive; the bondage, the sublimation, the sadomasochism and other sadistic acts are not too over-the-top.?
She compared it to an earlier erotic novel, The Story of O, first published in French in 1954. It depicted physically and emotionally damaging acts of sadomasochism, areas that Fifty Shades of Grey manages to avoid by respecting more traditional values.
?It?s all slightly dangerous, but it has that emotional appeal of a good woman, even a slightly innocent and virtuous woman, trying to heal her man,? Weatherbe said. ?And that?s been around forever, and we love that story.?
Weatherbe is planning a discussion group in Victoria to allow women, in particular, to have explicit conversations about sex and relationships. The surprise success of Fifty Shades of Grey is proof the time is right for the conversations to begin.
Jessica Walker, assistant manager of Munro?s Books in Victoria, said the book is the summer reading hit, a ?phenomenal? seller.
Walker said she has not yet read the book but a few staff members have. Comments have ranged from ?the writing is no great hell? to ?I really like the story so I don?t care much about the writing.?
She said buyers range in age mainly from 30 to 50. It has also become, according to claims heard at the bookstore?s till, a big book-club item.
?People say, ?Oh, I?m reading this for my book club,? ? Walker said. ?People will say that quite a lot at the till ? like they are having to read it against their will, but actually you can see they are quite excited about it.?
She said she has heard some feminists have criticized the book for its depiction of a woman who is forever giving up control. On the other hand, the book?s plot and characters follow a fairly traditional romantic theme, but one that is allowing readers to explore erotic literature, perhaps for the first time.
?It?s allowing a lot of people to check it out and even browse the erotica section when they wouldn?t normally, even if they are giggling when they buy it,? Walker said.
Weatherbe said, as a sex therapist, she believes the issues and responses to Fifty Shades of Grey are revealing an interest in sex and sexuality that is altogether healthy and not surprising considering the current demographic with its older population.
Women and men are living longer, providing them a chance to stay in relationships with lengthy durations previous generations rarely achieved. People simply died younger in the past.
?We as women now have yet to make that decision at 50ish to either let all that brain below the belt just wither up, shrivel and dry up, or to keep ourselves fully alive,? Weatherbe said.
?The idea that you just somehow wither up and die at 50, that myth around sexuality really needs to be challenged,? she said. ?And this book is really challenging that.?
Weatherbe also believes the book and its enormous popularity reveal something very hopeful for society.
The demographic may be growing older but people still remain interested in each other. And they are obviously enjoying the notion their interests can remain fully active, even long-term fascinations.
?People are asking, ?What is possible between a man and a woman? Can eroticism and sexuality be central in a relationship?
How do we keep it alive and well?? ? she said.
?And when we can communicate in a way that we have great connections, great collaboration between men and women, then we can go on being married for a long time, and be happily married and more married than ever before.?

Shares of online travel agencies plunge amid shaky forecasts from Priceline.com and Orbitz

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Some of the best-known online travel companies say growing economic uncertainty is causing fewer people to travel, especially in Europe.

Shares of the group plunged Wednesday, led by Priceline.com Inc. and Orbitz Worldwide Inc., who both cut their earnings and revenue expectations for the year. Both stocks were among the worst performers in the S&P 500.

The travel industry, in general, has remained strong as concerns mounted about the global economy faltering. But there have been warnings, including those from major hotel chains like Marriott International Inc., that slowing international growth may start to cause even well-off travellers to rethink their plans. Online travel companies are also being hurt by airlines' continued effort to keep costs low. Airlines are cutting flights to save money, which means fewer seats for travel bookers to sell.

Priceline.com Inc. late Tuesday reported lower-than-expected second-quarter revenue and warned European weakness would lead it to fall short of Wall Street's earnings and sales expectations for the year. Priceline's business is focused heavily on travel to Europe.

Several analysts cut their own forecasts on the stock, although many underscored that the more than $100 drop in Priceline shares was an opportunity to buy.

Then, Orbitz said its net income and revenue fell in the spring quarter from a year ago, and cut its growth forecast for the year. Its third-quarter expectations were also under what Wall Street forecast.

Expedia Inc., a small player in Europe, reported second-quarter earnings last month that fell 25 per cent but easily beat expectations.

Also last month, TripAdvisor Inc., which was spun off from Expedia in December, reported lower second-quarter earnings and lower-than-expected revenue.

In afternoon trading, shares of Orbitz lost 25 per cent, or $1.17 to reach $3.49. Priceline gave up 17 per cent, nearly $113, to hit $566.88. TripAdvisor fell 5 per cent, or $1.98, to $36.68. Expedia, which had opened the day lower, recovered and was up 76 cents, or 2 per cent, to $36.43.

Lomography Sprocket Rocket

By Jim Fisher

The Lomography Sprocket Rocket ($89.99 direct) ?is a fun 35mm film camera that shoots panoramic shots over the entirety of the film?including the sprocket area around the edges of the film. The camera delivers a panoramic perspective, about twice as wide as a standard camera, so you'll only get 18 shots on a 36-shot roll. It's a very fun toy camera, although you'll have to hunt around for a specialty processing lab or scan negatives yourself in order to digitize the sprocket area of the film.

Largely plastic in material, the camera is noticeably wide. There are two metal knobs on either side of its top?one to advance the film and the other to rewind it. The lens is manual focus, with indicators for focus on objects between 0.6 and 1 meter away, and for objects further away than a meter. There's also a shutter lever, a toggle switch to change between a standard 1/100-second shutter speed and bulb mode shooting (which keeps the shutter open as long as you hold the release down), and a switch to change adjust the lens aperture for sunny (f/16) or cloudy (f/11) shooting. There's also a hotshoe, so you can add an external flash for use indoors.

Once you've taken a shot, you'll need to turn the advance knob until you see a small white dot that indicates the film is advanced to the next frame. If you want to take a double exposure, just trip the shutter again?this can give you some very trippy results.

The 30mm lens offers a wider perspective than you'd expect from this focal length thanks to the wide format. The curved front element of the lens shows through in photos?there's significant distortion, producing an almost-fisheye effect that originates in the center of the frame.

Getting your film processed may be the biggest challenge you face with the Sprocket Rocket. While it's easy enough (for now) to walk into the local drug store and get a roll of 35mm film developed, one hour photo places aren't going to be able to scan the entirety of the negative, so you won't see the sprockets. If you have a flatbed scanner at home that supports scanning negatives, you can do it yourself. Lomography even sells the DigitalLIZA 135 Film Scanning Mask ($35) to hold your film in place for better scanning. If you're local to a Lomography Gallery Store, of which there are several in major cities around the world, you can take it there for scanning and processing.

The Sprocket Rocket isn't for everyone?you'll have to be open to shooting with a camera that doesn't use a memory card, has a pretty slow lens, and only offers one wide field of view. But the camera can give you some really cool results. Sure, you can add fake sprockets to your digital photos?but when a camera like the Sprocket Rocket exists, that just seems like cheating.

(AP) ? Clashes between government troops and rebels raged Thursday in opposition bastions of besieged Aleppo as President Bashar Assad's key state backer Iran hosted a gathering of allies for talks on how to end the conflict.

Speaking at the opening of the conference in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said his country rejects any foreign and military intervention in Syria and accused rebels of kidnapping nationals of other countries and using civilians as "human shields." Syrian rebels last week intercepted a bus carrying 48 Iranians in a Damascus suburb and seized them. Rebels claimed the men are military personnel, including some members of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, who were on a "reconnaissance mission" to help Assad's crackdown on the uprising.

Iran initially said the 48 were pilgrims visiting a Shiite shrine in Damascus. Salehi said Wednesday that some of the kidnapped Iranians are retired members of the army and Revolutionary Guard.

The overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim rebels have also abducted 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims who have been held in northern Syria since May.

Assad, meanwhile, appointed a new prime minister to replace the one who defected to neighboring Jordan this week in a humiliating blow to the regime. State-run news agency SANA said he appointed Health Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi, a Sunni member of the ruling Baath party who hails from the southern city of Daraa, birthplace of the 17-month-old uprising. He replaces Riad Hijab, who defected to Jordan this week. Like nearly all prominent defectors so far, Hijab is a member of Syria's majority Sunnis ? the Muslim sect which forms the bedrock of the uprising.

Still power remains closely held within Assad's inner circle and the leadership is dominated by members of the president's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The regime pressed its new assault on Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, for a second day. But blistering attacks on rebel positions from the ground and the air appear to be only slowly chipping away at the opposition's grip on its strongholds.

The state news agency claimed Wednesday that Assad's force had regained control of the Salaheddine neighborhood, the main rebel area in Aleppo. But activists said rebels were still putting up a fight there on Thursday.

"It's difficult to know exactly what's going on because of the scale of the bombing, but the rebels are still fighting," Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed told The Associated Press by Skype.

He said troops were using warplanes and tanks to shell the towns of Hreitan and Tel Rifat, some 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Aleppo, from where most of the rebels converged on the city.

"They are trying to cut the main lines from Tel Rifat to Aleppo," he said.

Syrian fighter jets launched airstrikes Wednesday on Tel Rifat, hitting a home and a high school and killing six people from one family, residents said.

They said government forces often shelled the village, but that this had been the first airstrike. They acknowledged that there were some rebels in the village, though an Associated Press reporter saw no armed men during a brief drive through the area.

Aleppo holds great symbolic and strategic importance. Some 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Turkish border, it has been a pillar of regime support during the uprising. An opposition victory there would allow easier access for weapons and fighters from Turkey, where many rebels are based.

State television in Iran, Syria's closest ally in the Middle East, said Tehran was hosting the conference of "friends" of Syria in the hope of finding a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Salehi said some 30 countries attended the meeting, including Russia and China, as well as Pakistan, Iraq, Algeria and Venezuela.

The meeting was called at short notice and most countries were represented at the ambassador level.

Russia in the past has urged the West to allow Tehran to take part in international discussions on how to settle the Syrian crisis, arguing that the Islamic republic could play an important role. Moscow has been the main protector and ally of Assad's regime, shielding it from the United Nations sanctions over its brutal crackdown on an uprising that has evolved into a full-blown civil war.

Link Mental Health to Your Business Strategy | Mosey and Mosey

Most organizations will see mental disorders as one of the top two categories on their drug utilization reports, and those conditions tend to be trending upwards, said Leanne MacFarlane, senior director, business development, with MHCSI, as part of a mental health panel at the conference.

?Most plans do a pretty good job of covering the medications, but are they covering services that help make sure members are on the right therapy, are using the medications appropriately and are being treated early??

Judith Plotkin, vice-president, strategic growth, with Homewood Human Solutions, believes plan sponsors could be doing a better job. ?There are no real standards, assessments or policies in place that address psychological health and mental illness in the workplace.?

While the Mental Health Commission recently released workplace guidelines, more formal procedures are needed, she said, adding, ?it?s critical to align a wellness strategy with a business strategy and also include mental health for employees to see the type of support available to them.?

?Part of aligning a wellness strategy is creating an integrated communication plan to support the various initiatives and engage employees,? said Chris MacDonald, assistant vice-president, health management services, with Manulife Financial Group Benefits. ?Consider gathering insights from key stakeholders on how best to engage employees in your organization. Then use that information to map out communications for Year 1, Year 2, etc. Refine as it?s needed.?

Plotkin said that not aligning a mental health strategy with a communication plan and business case is a ?kiss of death,? because it will be difficult to get executive buy-in. Part of planning to manage mental health is taking advantage of the services offered by providers, often in employee assistance programs.

?Support programs are important to promote?especially around managing stress, because it?s a precursor to more serious mental health conditions.?

For a mental health strategy to succeed, Karen Seward, workplace health specialist, said organizations must start by de-stigmatizing the issue. ?There are two factors to do this. One is getting executive buy-in around mental health, specifically; two is getting the lines of business talking about it and understanding their roles in managing it.?

Jamie Farrell, senior manager, benefit and investment programs, with Rogers Communications Inc., said managers are integral to the mental health dialogue.

?It?s ironic that it?s common to talk about physical health in the workplace, but you typically don?t hear much discussion about mental health. There is an opportunity with people managers to educate them on how to create the right environment where stigmas around mental health can be removed.?

In order to get mental health to the top of the priority list, the panellists agreed that HR and benefits managers should look for ?teachable moments? in meetings with senior executives to demonstrate the potential impact of proactively addressing this growing issue.

Republicans want to rewrite law imposing $50-billion cut in military spending

Dave Helling | The Kansas City Star ? Published August 06, 2012 Modified August 06, 2012

One year after Congress approved a controversial plan to extend the nation?s debt ceiling, Republicans are stepping up their campaign to repeal a major part of the law.

They?re worried about a part of the measure called ?sequester,? a requirement that spending for some federal government programs be slashed starting in 2013 once a ?supercommittee? of Congress failed to compromise on $1 trillion in deficit reductions last fall.

The law requires that more than $100 billion be sequestered ? or automatically cut ? in January.

GOP officeholders and candidates, however, aren?t worried about all the automatic reductions. They?re concerned that more than $50 billion in cuts will come from the Defense Department, saying that will threaten national security and tens of thousands of defense-related private-sector jobs.

They?re pushing to rewrite that part of the law.

?It was bad policy to put our national defense at risk, all dependent on this supercommittee,? U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, a Republican, said after a campaign stop in Belton, part of her 4th District. ?It will hollow out our military.?

But Democrats have resisted any significant changes to the defense sequester requirements. They contend that Republicans can restore the cuts to defense and other programs if they are willing to consider tax increases on wealthier Americans to battle the deficit.

And they argue that substantial cuts to other government services shouldn?t go forward while defense spending is restored.

?I unequivocally support well-examined and necessary funding for the military,? said U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. ?We must not, however, haphazardly slash programs that assist, for instance, education and children living in poverty.?

The debate over the defense sequester is spreading nationally.

House Republicans and White House officials squabbled angrily over it in a tense hearing Wednesday, each side blaming the other for the looming cuts.

Last week, three GOP senators ? led by 2008 presidential candidate John McCain ? traveled along the East Coast urging voters to help them overturn the automatic defense cuts next year.

Senate Democrats have responded by deferring votes on lifting the sequester. The spending cuts are supposed to hurt, they say, as an incentive to force compromise on deficit reduction.

The issue will be hotly debated in campaigns this fall, in part because the sequester could cost civilian jobs related to Defense Department spending.

More than 65,000 civilian jobs in Missouri are tied to the aerospace and defense industries, according to a 2011 study by Deloitte, an auditing firm. State officials think the number is even higher.

The government spent more than $9 billion on defense-related contracts in Missouri in 2011, according to a database at GovernmentContractsWon.com.

Aerospace and defense-related employment in Kansas affects more than 100,000 people, the Deloitte study found, largely because of Wichita?s role in aviation.

Defense employment creates ?a lot of jobs,? agreed U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, adding that both political parties share blame for the budget impasse.

The House Armed Services Committee, which counts Hartzler as a member, says Missouri would be among the 10 states hardest hit by a full defense sequester. Overall, the committee?s Republicans claim, the sequester could cost 1 million private-sector jobs, adding to the nation?s stubbornly high unemployment rate.

Yet not all of those jobs would be lost in a defense sequester. And Democrats claim the Pentagon can absorb some reductions, particularly as wars wind down.

They also point out that some Republicans now complaining about the sequester actually voted for the debt ceiling bill that put the measure into the law.

?Republican leaders have also ignored both their own role in creating sequestration in the first place and the fact that their stubborn resistance to any increase in revenues is the biggest reason why sequestration is even a possibility,? House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Adam Smith, a Washington state Democrat, wrote in June.

Some scoff at Republican claims that Pentagon cuts will cost civilian employment. GOP members routinely say federal spending can?t create jobs, they argue, but change their views when defense cuts are involved.

Even Hartzler paused when asked to explain why stimulus spending doesn?t create jobs while defense spending does.

?I wasn?t there when they did the stimulus package,? she said. ?I?m just supporting our national defense, making sure these jobs aren?t lost.?

Hartzler voted against the debt ceiling bill that created the sequester process, as did Cleaver.

Some Democrats, worried about civilian job cuts, are treading lightly when the defense sequester issue is raised. Hartzler?s Democratic opponent in the 4th Congressional District, Teresa Hensley, criticized the budget process but did not say the defense sequester should go forward as planned.

?Strong military bases are crucial to jobs and the economy in the 4th District, so I support taking steps to make sure they have the resources they need,? she said. ?But we can?t afford to allow Congress to continue its reckless handling of important issues like this.?

Whiteman Air Force Base is a major presence, and employer, in Missouri?s 4th District.

One defense contractor has threatened to send required notices of potential layoffs just before the November election, blaming the sequester. And Republicans have pressed legislation that would force the White House to outline where the cuts will come next year if the sequester is enacted, Blunt said.

?The White House is telling people to keep the effects of these cuts secret,? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week.

The administration, including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, has said it opposes the sequester and the defense cuts because of their potential effect on the military.

But White House officials have insisted the only way to avoid the cuts is to raise taxes on the wealthy and close corporate loopholes, something Republicans have so far rejected.

?Sequestration must be prevented,? said Democrats on the Armed Services Committee. ?We cannot separate out defense and protect it from cuts while devastating other important programs. If Republicans put revenue on the table, the solution is simple.?

Rob Hayles: GB cyclists are so great, the ... - BBC World News

Three-time Olympic cycling medallist Rob Hayles gives Metro his latest assessment of Great Britain?s astonishing performance in the velodrome. Wheels of wonder: Jason Kenny (right) becomes the latest British cycling gold medallist (Picture: PA) Jason Kenny took Britain?s astonishing gold rush at the velodrome to new heights with his impressive victory in the individual sprint. There were concerns world champion Gregory Bauge would cause problems in the final but, as they lined up, the Frenchman?s body language told me it was game over. His coach put his head in his chest and gave him a hug, something you just never see. But when it comes to the Olympics I?m rather surprised we don?t witness incidents like that more often. The opposition must be thoroughly demoralised by Britain?s greatness at the Games. It would be no real surprise if we go to Rio in 2016 with the biggest danger to our gold medal stars here in London coming from the youngsters bursting through our own ranks. One of our big guns the others will be glad to see the back of is Vicky Pendleton, who goes tonight in the women?s sprint. She is just ripping it up on the track at the moment and in what will presumably be the last race of her career, it is difficult to see who is going to stop her. Next on the list? Laura Trott is well placed in the omnium (Picture: Getty) Anna Meares would be most people?s favourite but she wobbled on home turf earlier this year when she only got a bronze in the world championships in Melbourne. Laura Trott is also on course for a medal in the women?s omnium where Sarah Hammer is her only real danger, so a fantastic finish is on the cards.
