Rob Hayles: GB cyclists are so great, the ... - BBC World News

Three-time Olympic cycling medallist Rob Hayles gives Metro his latest assessment of Great Britain?s astonishing performance in the velodrome. Wheels of wonder: Jason Kenny (right) becomes the latest British cycling gold medallist (Picture: PA) Jason Kenny took Britain?s astonishing gold rush at the velodrome to new heights with his impressive victory in the individual sprint. There were concerns world champion Gregory Bauge would cause problems in the final but, as they lined up, the Frenchman?s body language told me it was game over. His coach put his head in his chest and gave him a hug, something you just never see. But when it comes to the Olympics I?m rather surprised we don?t witness incidents like that more often. The opposition must be thoroughly demoralised by Britain?s greatness at the Games. It would be no real surprise if we go to Rio in 2016 with the biggest danger to our gold medal stars here in London coming from the youngsters bursting through our own ranks. One of our big guns the others will be glad to see the back of is Vicky Pendleton, who goes tonight in the women?s sprint. She is just ripping it up on the track at the moment and in what will presumably be the last race of her career, it is difficult to see who is going to stop her. Next on the list? Laura Trott is well placed in the omnium (Picture: Getty) Anna Meares would be most people?s favourite but she wobbled on home turf earlier this year when she only got a bronze in the world championships in Melbourne. Laura Trott is also on course for a medal in the women?s omnium where Sarah Hammer is her only real danger, so a fantastic finish is on the cards.
