Following the first twelve DC Super-Pets books, there are now six more available. All are prose books recommended for ages 6-8 and include illustrations by Art Baltazar (Tiny Titans) with his charming sense of humor.
The Amazing Mini-Mutts, written by Donald Lemke, stars special guests: pets invented by Cloey Nyberg, who won a student writing contest. She created Luna Moon (a Beagle with sniffing skills) and Sprightly Steve (a super-speed Pomeranian/Chihuahua), who are students at Krypto?s Bowwow Boot Camp. Guest stars include Ace the Bat-Hound, Rex the Wonder Dog, and all of the Space Canine Patrol Agents. When Brainicat attacks, the two new pups learn that size doesn?t measure ability.
Barnyard Brainwash, written by John Sazaklis, is one of the more bizarre titles, and that?s saying something. Batcow, owned by Batgirl (in a pink, skirted verson of her usual costume), stops the Mad Catter from hypnotizing farm animals into stealing crops. She does this by using the Batcave?s Bat-Computer and riding a Bat-cycle, all while chewing grass. Later, she battles the Crazy Kittens, the Catter?s hench-cats who wear Alice in Wonderland-inspired masks. Crazy!
Candy Store Caper, written by John Sazaklis, is another Bat-tale, this time starring Robin Robin, the Bird Wonder. (Genius!) He?s the pet bird of Tim Drake, and the two fight an evil old lady who?s really a hyena in disguise, aided by Ace. Crackers and Giggles, the Joker?s pets, have set up a candy and toy store to steal from all the kids of Gotham City.
Sleepy Time Crime, written by Sarah Hines Stephens, features the return of Super-Turtle! Lex Luthor?s iguana Ignatius is behind a plot to put pets to sleep with poisoned food, and Super-Turtle has to rescue Streaky the Super-Cat.
Super-Pets Showdown, written by Sarah Hines Stephens, is a huge team-up book, with the shape-changing Proty preventing a bunch of villain pets from taking over Justice League headquarters when the Legion of Super-Pets are decoyed away.
Starro and the Space Dolphins is written by Art Baltazar as well as illustrated by him. It?s another odd book, with Hawkman?s Big Ted and Lobo?s Dawg working together to rescue space dolphins kidnapped by the giant starfish Starro. I?m all for nostalgia, but I never thought Lobo would be considered a suitable character for a kids? book. Yet it?s a pleasure to see such an unusual cast.
