DOJ to Apple: Give back Amazon's iPad bookstore
Amazon could soon bring back a link to the Kindle store in its iPad app.

The DOJ proposed on Friday that Apple's competitors be allowed to provide links to their own e-bookstores within their e-reader apps. Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) has banned competitors from including those links since 2011. The Justice Department said letting Apple device users easily compare Apple's prices with those of Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500), Barnes & Noble (BKS, Fortune 500) and others would "reset competition to the conditions that existed before the conspiracy."
Two years ago, Apple controversially mandated that it get a 30% cut of all in-app sales. For that to happen, apps were barred from displaying "shop" links that routed users to separate stores on the Web that Apple had no control over, such as Amazon's Kindle store. If the court agrees to the DOJ's proposal, booksellers, such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, could bring back those shop links.
Apple, which has said it will appeal the court's July decision, also filed a brief Friday strongly opposing the DOJ's proposals, calling them "unnecessary, overbroad, vague and punitive."
The proposal is just one of several submitted by the DOJ and 33 State Attorneys General to the court to "prevent a recurrence of the illegal activities." They also proposed that Apple terminate its existing agreements with the five major publishers with which it conspired. Those five publishers -- CBS's (CBS, Fortune 500) Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, Pearson (PSO)'s Penguin Group, Macmillan and News Corp (NWS).'s HarperCollins -- decided to settle rather than go to trial.
If the court upholds the DOJ's proposals, Apple would also be ordered to refrain from entering certain new e-book distribution contracts for five years, from negotiating contracts with content providers that are likely to increase competitors' prices, and from retaliating against publishers for refusing to sell e-books on the so-called agency model. That model, in which the publishers set their own prices and Apple takes a 30% cut off the top, was at the heart of the conspiracy to raise e-book prices.
The DOJ additionally asked that an external monitor, whose salary would be paid by Apple, be appointed to ensure the company complies with the new mandates.
The court will hold a hearing on the proposed remedies on August 9.

NEW HAVEN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Former star Ty Grace returns as coach

WEST HAVEN ? There?s one thing certain about Ty Grace in her new role as women?s basketball coach at the University of New Haven: She isn?t going to be intimidated by the competition.
That?s not to say that battling the likes of Northeast-10 powerhouses like Bentley isn?t difficult, but Grace has spent the last four years as an assistant at Seton Hall.
?I?ve been in the Big East,? Grace said. ?We?ve played UConn and Notre Dame, the best teams in the country.?
Grace replaces Jessica Smith, who left to take an assistant?s role under first-year coach Jessica Mannetti at Sacred Heart University. Smith led the Chargers to a 14-13 mark last season, a staunch improvement from the 3-23 mark the prior season.
?The foundation is here,? Grace said. ?Now we have to build on it.?
It is a homecoming for Grace, who graduated from New Haven in 1999 and registered over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her stellar career.
?I?m just so excited to be back,? Grace said. ?It?s going to be so much fun to play in alumni games and go to homecoming and see all my old friends. I haven?t been able to do that in so long because of my other commitments.?
Grace has 13 years of Division I coaching experience and served as a head coach at Ramapo College in New Jersey from 2004-06. She most recently served under current Connecticut Sun coach and Hall of Famer Anne Donovan while at Seton Hall as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator.
?Without a doubt (Donovan) is one of the best coaches I?ve ever worked for,? Grace said. ?I learned so much from her. We were building a great program there and I learned how to build from her. She?s also just a great person.?
Grace was instrumental in assembling recruiting classes ranked as high as 25th in Division I, including the signing of two McDonald?s All-America nominees. Continued...
Grace was Donovan?s top recruiter while at Seton Hall and hopes to hone that skill at New Haven. For now, however, she takes over a team with a full roster.
?We had no scholarships (to offer) so I?m just working for the 2014 season,? Grace said. ?To be a great team you have to have great players and I?m hoping that the relationships I?ve built will pay off. I?ve already been out recruiting and getting ready for next season.
?One thing that I?m looking for is great kids, too. I want to have great players, but they have to be great kids.?
The most difficult task that Grace may face is evaluating her current players. Grace not only didn?t recruit them, she?s never seen them play.
?I?ve gotten a chance to talk to each one of them and they?re all excited,? she said. ?Right now I?ve be watching tapes on them. But it will be fine. We?ve got time to work together and build a team.?
Grace said she wasn?t about to put a timetable on making the Chargers a conference contender.
?That?s the goal,? she said. ?New Haven wouldn?t have hired me if they didn?t think that I could do it and I wouldn?t have taken the job if that wasn?t in their plans. It?s going to be a process. I don?t know if it?s going to take four years or so, but we have a high level of expectations.?
Grace is the 16th head coach in program history and was inducted into the New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.

Doppler effect takes a spin
Light's twistiness allows researchers to measure rotating object's speed

A twist on the physics that cops use to clock speeding drivers can determine how fast an object is spinning. The approach could be used to protect wind turbines from damaging winds, learn about distant astronomical objects or detect tornadoes.
The Doppler effect is familiar to anyone who has heard the pitch of a siren rise and fall as an ambulance whizzes past. It describes how the frequency of light waves (or the pitch of sound waves) emitted by a moving object becomes higher as the object approaches an observer and lower as it moves away. Today people exploit the Doppler effect to track the motion of raindrops, cars and galaxies.
But Doppler?s kryptonite has always been rotating objects that are neither moving toward nor away from the observer, like the second hand on a clock.
Physicist Martin Lavery at the University of Glasgow in Scotland and colleagues thought that they could measure rotational speed by determining how a spinning object changes light waves? orbital angular momentum. In focused beams such as lasers, successive waves of light move like ocean waves on a beach: straight on, with periodic crests and troughs. But most light is messier: The waves wind around like a corkscrew.
Lavery?s team plated a plastic disk with aluminum foil and hooked it up to a spinning motor. Then the researchers bounced a light beam off the disk that had a special property: Its waves twisted either clockwise or counterclockwise.
When Lavery?s team measured the light after it bounced off the disk, they found that the frequency of waves twisting in the same direction as the disk was spinning had become higher, while the light twisting in the opposite direction had a lower frequency. The change allowed the researchers to calculate the disk?s speed of rotation, they report in the Aug. 2 Science.
?This is the first experimental evidence that this is possible,? says Bo Thid?, a physicist at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Uppsala.
Lavery and his team then did a similar experiment with ordinary light to prove that, even with waves twisting in all directions, they could take advantage of the Doppler change in angular momentum to measure the speed of the disk?s rotation.
Engineers could exploit the technique to protect wind turbines, which can get damaged by violent, swirling air currents. Lavery envisions a sensor on the nose of a turbine that would detect dangerous vortices and switch the turbine off.
Thid? says that weather radar could exploit the rotational Doppler effect to detect tornadoes before they reach the ground. Two years ago, he proposed a similar method to detect the rotation rate of supermassive black holes like the one lurking at the center of our galaxy (SN: 3/12/11, p. 14). ?This experiment tells the rest of the world that there?s a lot to be gained by using this technique,? he says. ?It will push people to go ahead and start to build applications.?

DDA?s new land pooling policy can go a long way in ensuring that real estate development is integrated with economic activity for sustained growth, the Urban Development Secretary said on July 31.
?Land pooling policy has ushered in a new development paradigm whereby land owners will get back their land dues with development around and people will benefit from the development plan. Besides infrastructure development will also takes place as part of the policy,? Krishna said at the National Real Estate Summit organised by the PHDCCI here.
The land pooling policy, which has been passed by the DDA, allows land-owners to pool their land for development by the city?s land owning agency.
But now instead of compensation, they would get back 40-60 per cent of land after development of infrastructure by DDA, which they can keep for themselves or give to private developers.
Describing the new policy as a ?win-all? situation, the Secretary said, ?real estate development must be integrated with economic activity to sustain the growth.?
Faced with procedural difficulties, the real estate sector is seeking government?s attention to address the issues.
Admitting challenges in sustaining growth in the sector, the Secretary said ?there is a need for balanced approach and the Real Estate Bill 2013 aims towards transparency in contractual obligations to ensure consumer protection.?
The Bill is slated to be introduced in the coming Monsoon session. He said ?unified building bylaws are under revision as part of the Delhi Master Plan 2021.?
He said streamlining of property records is being done? under JNNURM, adding Uttar Pradesh has done it under the scheme and other states should also do it.
However, Urban Development Secretary said there are many areas which require equal attention for sustained development in urban areas which include recycling of waste materials and water, solid waste management, rain water harvesting, emission reduction, soil conservation.

No Gaming Mouse Is This Exciting, But The New Naga Comes Close
This is the most dramatic gaming mouse trailer of 2013. It is for a mouse that leaps across canyons in a sports car in slow motion. The new Razer Naga does not do that, but it's wonderfully clicky.
Last year I pitted three MMO gaming mice against each other in a battle of the buttons, and Razer's 12-button Naga did not win. It was a lovely piece of hardware, but the 12 side buttosn were smooth and hard to tell apart, and despite a set of swappabel ergnomic bits, the Naga just wasn't as comfortable as the competition.
So, for the 2013 edition of the Naga, Razer fixed those problems.
It's certainly a more comfortable hand rest than its predecessor, for one, and it didn't have to resort to hot swapping gimmicks to achieve that. The buttons on the side are now mechanical (clicky!) and ridged, making it much easier to feel out individual keys with your thumb. The new scroll wheel tilts side-to-side for additional input, and there's even a left-handed version for the freaky people in the audience.
The only thing I'm not liking about the 2013 Naga is the finish. I'm used to soft, rubberized plastic, and this one somewhat gritty.
Still, a marked improvement over the previous generation, addressing every concern I had, and only adding one new one. That's almost worth an incredibly dramatic debut trailer. Almost.
The new Razer Naga will be on sale shortly at the Razer store for $79.99.

Ingolstadt, 2013-07-29 - Audi is the first carmaker to bring the fast LTE data transfer standard to the car with full integration. It can be ordered as an option in the Audi S3 Sportback from July, and in all other model variants of the premium compact from early November. LTE technology is very important for Audi connect, the networking of the car with the driver, the Internet and the environment.
The new LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard takes mobile Internet to a new dimension. LTE enables the exchange of large amounts of data via the Internet, such as music and films in HD quality. Commercial LTE networks already exist in many European countries and in the USA. In Germany, LTE is available in a few large cities, but is primarily active in many rural areas. The standard is expected to be available everywhere by the end of 2014.
To use LTE, a suitable SIM card with a data flat rate simply needs to be inserted into the appropriate slot in the MMI navigation plus unit in the Audi S3 Sportback. When the passengers connect their mobile end devices to the WLAN hotspot integrated into the car, they can surf the web independently of one another. For example, one passenger can participate in a video conference while another watches a video.
The MMI navigation plus uses LTE to deliver the tailored services of Audi connect to the driver ? from navigation with Google Earth and Google Street View to Audi music stream web radio and online traffic information. The community services Facebook and Twitter have also been made vehicle-friendly with a text-to-speech function and a text function with prepared text modules. In addition, there are over a dozen Audi connect services, including a text-to-speech function for e-mail and a dictation function for text messages (SMS). And the range of services is expanding rapidly.
LTE technology can be ordered for the Audi S3 Sportback from July, and for all other variants of the A3 family from November. Audi connect is the keyword for the brand's intensive efforts to continuously develop new networking solutions. New technologies are increasingly making cars with the four rings more of an experiential space. The LTE standard is expected to provide a strong boost to the seamless use of media stored on a server on the Internet (data in the cloud). Audi is also a major driving force behind the networking with other automobiles and the transport infrastructure (car-to-X-communication).

Josh Stein is founder and CEO of AdhereTech of New York, NY.
Tell me about yourself and the company.
I graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006 with degrees in economics and finance. Long story short, instead of going into finance, I decided to enter into the world of startups. I worked for various early-stage consumer and tech companies for four years, then in 2010 I began my MBA studies at Wharton. I graduated from Wharton in 2012. AdhereTech is a company that I founded while I while I was an MBA student.

What were the other startups? Were they related to AdhereTech?
The other relatively well-known companies that I worked for were FreshDirect, PlaceVine, and Lot18. None of these startups were healthcare related. This is my first time in healthcare.
?
How did you get into the medication adherence business?
Both of my parents are in healthcare. My dad is a doctor and my mom is an occupational therapist. Years ago I asked them about the biggest problems in healthcare. That?s when they opened my eyes to issues of medication non-adherence.
In response, I came up with the idea of a pill bottle with a timer on top ? very simple. That sat in my list of business ideas for about a year until I started business school. In business school we did these activities called innovation tournaments, where everyone in a class submits an idea into a big list. The ideas on said list are then voted on in a crowd-sourced, bracket-style tournament. Thankfully, my idea for the timer cap did pretty well.
Then I thought, let me do a deep dive and see if this is a viable idea. I saw that other smart pill bottles, so I basically designed AdhereTech around the perceived downfalls of existing products. I wrote a business plan and worked with the University of Alabama ? Huntsville to build a working prototype. By the time I graduated in 2012, we had all that in place, and I recruited an incredible team.
Then I joined Blueprint Health, a healthcare accelerator program in New York, which is absolutely fantastic. After many months of hard work, we built a working prototype, won some competitions, lined up some trials, and put the pieces in place for potential partnerships. We have a really solid team, great advisors, and promising opportunities lined up in the coming months.
What does AdhereTech?s pill bottle do that the rest don?t?
There are three main differences between AdhereTech?s bottle and most similar products in the space. First is usability. AdhereTech has a wireless chip that automatically connects to the cloud and allows the product to be used anywhere, whereas most others use a hub model that requires user setup and restricts usage to a certain radius around the hub. Second is accuracy. AdhereTech measures the open and close of the cap plus the contents, whereas some others only measure whether a device was used. Third is access. AdhereTech is using a HIPAA-compliant open API, whereas some others utilize a closed system.
During the optimal dosage time, the bottle pulses blue. That?s the time the patient should take the pill. If a dose is missed, the bottle flashes red and beeps. At the same time, the patient will get a phone call or text message.
?
What happens if you don?t pick up the phone?
We?re still designing that system, but it will call you every X minutes. That would vary based on the disease and the patient?s preferences. This is fully configurable.
More of the diseases that we?re targeting, such as HIV/AIDS or cancer, demand immediate notifications to ensure adherence, especially when compared to something like hypertension. However, we have to make sure not to upset the patient. We don?t want this to be something that annoys people, so we?re very cognizant of that issue.
There are different pill shapes and sizes and some are square, some are rectangle, some are capsules. How does your technology work?
The bottle transmits two pieces of data to the cloud and this data is sent whenever the bottle is opened or closed. First, it sends a timestamp of the open and close of the cap. Secondly, the bottle also has a patented capacitance sensor built inside which sends a capacitance measurement of the contents. This allows AdhereTech to track the number of remaining pills at any given time and determine how many pills were removed.
Our server then compares this information ? how many pills a patient took and when he/she took them ? to the patient?s recommended dosage schedule. If a discrepancy is identified, such as missing a dosage or incorrect dosage consumption, our automated system will then intervene via a phone call or text message.
?
What?s your distribution model going to look like?
We haven?t finalized our distribution model, but we have a few options, and these vary depending on the exact business model that we pursue. Our ideal business and distribution model is to integrate with drug manufacturers and pharmacies so they can do all of the setup for the patient. Additionally, we could also send the bottle straight to the patient, but this would require the user to set up the bottle. We want to avoid that because it requires the patient to do something even if it?s as simple as pouring the pills in. Bottles could also be given to patients as they are discharged from the hospital.

How about FDA approval?
We need 510(k) approval. We will be a Class I medical device. We?ve already begun the process of engaging with FDA consultants to help us realize what we have to do. There are already reminder devices out there, so we are confident that there is a pathway paved for us.

When will you sell it to the general public?
We?ll be starting trials in the fall with a variety of clinics and hospitals. We?re hoping to start a major trial with a big pharma in early 2014 and release to the general public by late 2014 or early 2015.

Who else is involved in the company? I see two other pictures on the site.
Those are my two co-founders, both of whom are brilliant and great at what they do. John is AdhereTech?s CTO. He has dual degrees from Yale and joined the team after graduating with his masters in computer science. Mike joined the team a little later, but is undoubtedly a co-founder. He has an undergrad from Bucknell and a master?s from Ohio State, both in mechanical engineering. Mike spent the past three years designing jet engine parts at GE and overseeing certain aspects in manufacturing process. I couldn?t have found two smarter, harder-working professionals to work with.

How about funding?
Our seed round is essentially closed. As of today, we?ve raised $750,000. However, we will always make a bit of room for the right investor. Right now we are limiting ourselves to smart people in healthcare who are willing to commit more than just money.

Where are you located?
We work at the Blueprint Health offices in Soho in New York City. The Blueprint Accelerator program was incredible. I can?t say enough fantastic things about it. Now we?re also part of a new accelerator called Startup Health.

Victim was taking his dog and child for a walk when a pit bull from ran from a house and attacked them. The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries and his dog was taken to the vet for injuries to his head. This is the second time this dog has bitten someone. The owner was cited for the last incident and will be cited again for this incident. An additional charge of ?harboring a dangerous dog? will be filed.

On patrol police found the lights on at the basketball courts. Unknown actors pushed the bleachers up against the light post to the control box. There was trash, t-shirts, water bottles and a basketball left behind. The actors also broke out one of the lights that were center court and attempted to burn items on the court.

He requested the victim send two checks in return to two addresses for a total of $2,200. Victim deposited the check and wired the money as requested. The $3,500 check the buyer sent was eventually discovered to be counterfeit.
The victim was advised this practice is a common internet scam.

3 Nutrients Linked with a Better Night's Sleep

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but the U.S. seems to have become a nation obsessed with pills. If something doesn't work right, no worries, there's a pill for that.
So when we have trouble sleeping, naturally, we go see the doctor for a prescription. Who cares that we might try to sleepwalk?our way behind the wheel of a car? At least we're sleeping, right? Wrong!
If you ask me, prescriptions, especially those with severe and dangerous side effects, should always be a last resort.
There could be many reasons for not sleeping well, and stress often plays a role, but quite a few studies have shown that getting the right nutrients can help you get a good night's rest. Why not try eating right, before popping an Ambien?
Here's a look at three common sleep problems that have been linked to vitamin or mineral deficiencies:
Trouble getting to sleep: Magnesium plays a key role in the bodily function that regulates sleep. Insomnia is one of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency, and in fact, a 2006 analysis in the journal Medical Hypothesis suggests that such a deficiency may even be the cause of most major depression and mental health problems.
Bottom line: magnesium is an extremely important mineral. You'll find it in dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and Brazil nuts, beans and lentils and some types of fish. ?
Trouble staying asleep: Potassium supplements may be helpful to those who have trouble sleeping through the night, according to a 1991 study in the journal Sleep. Of course, although potassium is available in pill form, I prefer to get most of my nutrients directly from their sources by eating a healthy diet.
When most people think about potassium, they think bananas. Bananas do contain a fair amount of this mineral (about 10% of the daily value), but they aren't the best source. Beans, leafy greens and baked potatoes are the best sources. Avocados are a great source too ? good news for the guacamole lovers!
Tired during the day: There is a strong correlation between excessive daytime sleepiness and vitamin D deficiency, a 2012 study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found. The sun's rays are the best source for this vitamin, but not everyone can get the necessary sun exposure due to climate or skin cancer concerns.
There are a few food sources of vitamin D, such as swordfish, salmon, tuna and fortified foods, but this is one case where I would suggest supplementation. It's not likely that you would get enough of the sunshine vitamin from food alone.?

Monson: Utah football will dominate the Pac-12 ? or not ? in 2013

One thing Friday?s Pac-12 media day did was fire up a whole lot of people for college football, regardless of where their team finished a season ago or where their team is predicted to finish this time around. By the last week of July, yesterday?s losses had faded and tomorrow?s wins were vibrant.
Part of this optimism was provided by the league?s coaches, so eager to move forward, the big winners toward continued success, the middle-of-the-packers toward increased success, the losers toward any success.
Utah?s Kyle Whittingham was one of the more efficient presenters, doling out information to reporters as though they were players in his team room. Concise. Direct. Honest. He said last year?s 5-7 season, 3-6 in league, "ticks you off. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It?s motivation."
He added that the Utes being picked by the media to finish fifth in the Pac-12 South was of little significance to him and his team. "It means nothing," he said. "It?s something we don?t pay any attention to. The players glance at it and put it aside."
More from Whittingham in a minute. First, a few observations from and about other Pac-12 coaches:
Stanford?s David Shaw was articulate and smooth, half answering questions, half selling the merits of his program. When asked, off subject a bit, whether athletes should be given additional money for playing college football, he showed empathy for the needs of student-athletes, but reminded everybody that, at Stanford, those student-athletes already were getting a $58,000-a-year education.
Mike Leach reacted to questions about his old statements regarding last year?s Wazzu team being a bunch of zombies and corpses. He said those zombies and corpses had a great offseason. He also talked about his upcoming book and said that everybody should buy it.
Sonny Dykes, the new coach at Cal, said the pomp and circumstance surrounding the Pac-12 was a lot different than what he experienced at La. Tech in the WAC. He said the Bears would take their offense up-tempo, that doing so was not unsafe for players, and that Cal, coming off a woeful 3-9 season, 2-7 in league, was going to "surprise some people."
Washington?s Steve Sarkisian, also known as Seven-Win Steve, said his team is looking forward to better performances, better fortune and, at last, more wins. He?s gone 7-6 the past three seasons, which is an improvement over his first year (5-7).
Mark Helfrich sounded and looked like a man comfortable enough to have been stretching out on his Barcalounger. Despite being a new head coach at Oregon, he knows he?s got the fastest car on the track, a car he helped build and tune as the Ducks? offensive crew chief the past four seasons. "It?s an honor to follow in Chip Kelly?s footsteps," he said. It?s even more of an honor when you?ve got De?Anthony Thomas, who rolled for 1,757 all-purpose yards in 2012 and Marcus Mariota, an All-Pac-12 quarterback who broke the league?s freshman record for touchdown passes with 32.

Lane Kiffin?s Q-and-A session lasted longer than anyone else?s. No big surprise. USC underachieved badly last season with a 7-6 record, 5-4 in the South, and, despite Trojan AD Pat Haden saying Kiffin?s job is safe, nobody believes that. The coach has to come up with a new starting quarterback and overall consistency that last year?s team lacked. Kiffin talked about the bevy of four-star recruits SC is bringing in this season and he admitted his team needs them.
Of all the coaches, though, Whttingham burned from Point A to Point Z with the most candor and clarity. He said Utah?s top three biggest failings from a year ago were "the throw game, red-zone defense and lack of takeaways." He talked about Travis Wilson and how desperate the Utes are for continuity at quarterback, something they haven?t had over the past four seasons. He also addressed how much quality recruiting has picked up since Utah joined the Pac-12, saying that many ? up to three-fourths ? of the athletes the program has recently attracted wouldn?t have come otherwise.
Utah?s in deep need, having lost so many players from last year?s team.
"[We] can?t wait to get back at it after the obvious disappointment of last season, not getting to a bowl game," Whittingham said. "It gave us a lot of time to reflect in the offseason. ? Offensively, we didn?t throw the ball near well enough. That?s the primary reason we brought Dennis [Erickson] in ? to jump-start the offense, the throw game in particular.
"Defensively, we?ve got some things to correct. Red-zone defense was awful compared to what we?re used to. Didn?t take the ball away nearly enough. Those are the two biggest areas that led to a very average year on defense. ? We?ve got some things to work on, without a doubt."
Two bits of buoyancy for the Utes, Whittingham said, are found where the rough stuff happens: "We feel we are much improved on the offensive line, and we will once again be one of the best defensive lines in the conference."
Take, then, what you will from Pac-12 media day ? optimism, pessimism or realism. In the final week of July, winning or even losing sounds better than no football at all.

Outdoor Activities Can Improve Your Mental Health | Psych Central ...

University of Michigan researchers believe participation in extended outdoor activities improves long-term psychological well-being.
Veterans were surveyed before and after a multi-day wilderness recreation experience, which involved camping and hiking in groups of between six and 12 participants.
More than half of participants reported that they frequently experienced physical or mental health problems in everyday life.
One week after the experience, veterans reported a greater than 10 percent improvement in several measures of psychological well-being, a 9 percent increase in social functioning, and a nearly 8 percent gain in positive life outlook.
In some cases, the results persisted over the next month.
?The findings suggest that extended group-based nature recreation can have significant positive impacts on veterans struggling with serious health problems,? said Jason Duvall, Ph.D., one of the study?s lead authors.
?Although more research is needed and many questions remain, the use of extended group-based outdoor recreation programs to ease veterans? transition back into civilian life seems to be a promising approach.?
The Sierra Club, a grassroots environmental organization, operates the Military Family and Veterans Initiative, which focuses on providing military service members and their families with access to outdoor experiences.
For the study, the Sierra Club wanted to know whether these efforts were making a difference in the lives of veterans. While both anecdotal and experimental data suggest exposure to green environments is beneficial, few studies have examined the impacts of these programs on veterans specifically.
?The Sierra Club knows anecdotally the mental, emotional and physical benefits that come from spending time in nature, particularly for returning service members for whom the outdoors can be integral to their reintegration,? said Stacy Bare, Sierra Club mission outdoors director.
?The results of the University of Michigan?s study reinforce these beliefs and support our efforts to make these types of experiences available to more people.?
Comments by veterans supported the survey conclusions.
?This trip helped me to reevaluate what?s important in life,? said Tim, a 52-year-old Navy veteran. ?It was nice to live a week without being ?plugged in? and take in the great outdoors.?
?It helped me to remember who I was and enjoy something I haven?t in a long time,? added Dan, a 39-year-old Army veteran.
Discovering a natural method to help veterans (and familes) cope with issues is an important objective. In response, a number of outdoor recreation groups developed group-based nature recreation programs targeting veterans.
Veterans may identify more strongly with activities outdoors that involve physical challenge, camaraderie and achievement of an objective ? experiences that are shared with their military service.
As a result, the approach used by these programs may be more appealing than conventional clinical treatments when it comes to dealing with mental health issues.
?The excursions are a supportive environment because in many ways, they recreate many positive aspects of the military experience,? Duvall said. ?They are outside, in a group, sharing similar mental models and, in a sense, on a mission. In that scenario, the impact of the natural environment might be heightened.?
The Sierra Club chose four partner organizations as part of the study group: Higher Ground (Sun Valley, Idaho), Wasatch Adaptive Sports (Snowbird, Utah), Wilderness Inquiry (Minneapolis, Minn.), and Women?s Wilderness Institute (Boulder, Colo.).
Combined, the groups offered 12 programs lasting four to seven days. The excursions generally did not include formal, structured psychological counseling or therapy. Instead, the emphasis was on the outdoor programs, from fly-fishing, kayaking and whitewater rafting to backpacking and paddling.
The study sample was 98 veterans. They were surveyed one week before, one week after, and about one month after participating. In addition to assessing demographic and background information, the survey itself measured changes in psychological well-being, social functioning, life outlook, and activity engagement over time.
Participation in the outdoor activities appears to have extended benefits including a new openness or creativity as veterans were more likely to take part in activities that involved exploration (such as learning new things or testing abilities) and helping others.
The changes in well-being were also particularly strong for veterans who had initially reported more severe ongoing health issues, with the magnitude of improvements often 1.5 times that of those with less serious health problems.
?Veterans with more serious health problems seemed to benefit most,? Duvall said.
