UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones welcomes new contender ? his newborn daughter

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones sent out a tweet early Monday morning that he would soon have big news to share. Would it be about his fight on April 27 with Chael Sonnen? Something about the latest episode of "The Ultimate Fighter?" Nah, it was much better than that. Jones shared the news that he and girlfriend Jessie Moses had welcomed their third child into the world.

Though Jones was beaming with pride and clearly happy to be there for the birth of his third daughter, he still is a fighter. They always hate to miss a workout.

A window into Europa's ocean lies right at the surface

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

If you could lick the surface of Jupiter's icy moon Europa, you would actually be sampling a bit of the ocean beneath. So says Mike Brown, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Brown?known as the Pluto killer for discovering a Kuiper-belt object that led to the demotion of Pluto from planetary status?and Kevin Hand from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have found the strongest evidence yet that salty water from the vast liquid ocean beneath Europa's frozen exterior actually makes its way to the surface.

The finding, based on some of the first data of its kind since NASA's Galileo mission (1989) to study Jupiter and its moons, suggests that there is a chemical exchange between the ocean and surface, making the ocean a richer chemical environment, and implies that learning more about the ocean could be as simple as analyzing the moon's surface. The work is described in a paper that has been accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal.

"We now have evidence that Europa's ocean is not isolated?that the ocean and the surface talk to each other and exchange chemicals," says Brown, the Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor and professor of planetary astronomy at Caltech. "That means that energy might be going into the ocean, which is important in terms of the possibilities for life there. It also means that if you'd like to know what's in the ocean, you can just go to the surface and scrape some off."

"The surface ice is providing us a window into that potentially habitable ocean below," says Hand, deputy chief scientist for solar system exploration at JPL.

Since the days of the Galileo mission, when the spacecraft showed that Europa was covered with an icy shell, scientists have debated the composition of Europa's surface. The infrared spectrometer aboard Galileo was not capable of providing the detail needed to definitively identify some of the materials present on the surface. Now, using current technology on ground-based telescopes, Brown and Hand have identified a spectroscopic feature on Europa's surface that indicates the presence of a magnesium sulfate salt, a mineral called epsomite, that could only originate from the ocean below.

"Magnesium should not be on the surface of Europa unless it's coming from the ocean," Brown says. "So that means ocean water gets onto the surface, and stuff on the surface presumably gets into the ocean water."

Europa's ocean is thought to be 100 kilometers deep and covers the entire globe. The moon remains locked in relation to Jupiter, with the same hemisphere always leading and the other trailing in its orbit. The leading hemisphere has a yellowish appearance, while the trailing hemisphere seems to be splattered and streaked with a red material.

The spectroscopic data from that red side has been a cause of scientific debate for 15 years. It is thought that one of Jupiter's largest moons, Io, spews volcanic sulfur from its atmosphere, and Jupiter's strong magnetic field sends some of that sulfur hurtling toward the trailing hemisphere of Europa, where it sticks. It is also clear from Galileo's data that there is something other than pure water ice on the trailing hemisphere's surface. The debate has focused on what that other something is?i.e., what has caused the spectroscopic data to deviate from the signature of pure water ice.

"From Galileo's spectra, people knew something was there besides water. They argued for years over what it might be?sodium sulfate, hydrogen sulfate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, all these things that look more or less similar in this range of the spectrum," says Brown. "But the really difficult thing was that the spectrometer on the Galileo spacecraft was just too coarse."

Brown and Hand decided that the latest spectrometers on ground-based telescopes could improve the data pertaining to Europa, even from a distance of about 400 million miles. Using the Keck II telescope on Mauna Kea?which is outfitted with adaptive optics to adjust for the blurring effect of Earth's atmosphere?and its OH-Suppressing Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (OSIRIS), they first mapped the distribution of pure water ice versus anything else on the moon. The spectra showed that even Europa's leading hemisphere contains significant amounts of nonwater ice. Then, at low latitudes on the trailing hemisphere?the area with the greatest concentration of the nonwater ice material?they found a tiny dip in the spectrum that had never been detected before.

"We now have the best spectrum of this thing in the world," Brown says. "Nobody knew there was this little dip in the spectrum because no one had the resolution to zoom in on it before."

The two researchers racked their brains to come up with materials that might explain the new spectroscopic feature, and then tested everything from sodium chloride to Drano in Hand's lab at JPL, where he tries to simulate the environments found on various icy worlds. "We tried to think outside the box to consider all sorts of other possibilities, but at the end of the day, the magnesium sulfate persisted," Hand says.

Some scientists had long suspected that magnesium sulfate was on the surface of Europa. But, Brown says, "the interesting twist is that it doesn't look like the magnesium sulfate is coming from the ocean." Since the mineral he and Hand found is only on the trailing side, where the moon is being bombarded with sulfur from Io, they believe that there is a magnesium-bearing mineral everywhere on Europa that produces magnesium sulfate in combination with sulfur. The pervasive magnesium-bearing mineral might also be what makes up the nonwater ice detected on the leading hemisphere's surface.

Brown and Hand believe that this mystery magnesium-bearing mineral is magnesium chloride. But magnesium is not the only unexpected element on the surface of Europa. Fifteen years ago, Brown showed that Europa is surrounded by an atmosphere of atomic sodium and potassium, presumably originating from the surface. The researchers reason that the sodium and potassium chlorides are actually the dominant salts on the surface of Europa, but that they are not detectable because they have no clear spectral features.

The scientists combined this information with the fact that Europa's ocean can only be one of two types?either sulfate-rich or chlorine-rich. Having ruled out the sulfate-rich version since magnesium sulfate was found only on the trailing side, Brown and Hand hypothesize that the ocean is chlorine-rich and that the sodium and potassium must be present as chlorides.

Therefore, Brown says, they believe the composition of Europa's sea closely resembles the salty ocean of Earth. "If you could go swim down in the ocean of Europa and taste it, it would just taste like normal old salt," he says.

Hand emphasizes that, from an astrobiology standpoint, Europa is considered a premier target in the search for life beyond Earth; a NASA-funded study team led by JPL and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory have been working with the scientific community to identify options to explore Europa further. "If we've learned anything about life on Earth, it's that where there's liquid water, there's generally life," Hand says. "And of course our ocean is a nice salty ocean. Perhaps Europa's salty ocean is also a wonderful place for life."

Tigers' 2013 Football Schedule Announced | WSPA

By: Clemson Athletics | WSPA-TV

Clemson?s 2013 football schedule includes three games against teams that finished the 2012 season in the top 10 in the nation.? The schedule? was released by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Monday.

Two of the three games against top 10 teams from 2012 will be non-conference opponents Georgia and South Carolina.? Clemson and Nevada are the only schools in the nation to play two non-conference games against teams that finished the 2012 season in the top 10.

Clemson will open the season with Georgia at home and close the season at South Carolina.? The Tigers also face a 2012 top 10 Florida State team at Clemson on October 19.

Clemson will have a pair of Thursday night games that will be televised nationally by ESPN, September 19 at NC State and November 14 vs. Georgia Tech at Clemson. It will be Clemson?s first home Thursday night game since October 25, 2002 when Clemson played NC State, and just the third in history.

It will be just the second year that Clemson has played a pair of Thursday night games. The 2002 season was the only other year it has happened. With the two Thursday night games and a 14-week time span for the regular season due to the nature of the calendar, Clemson will not play on four Saturday?s once the season begins. ?Clemson will not play on September 14, September 21, November 9 and November 16.

?Having a Thursday night, nationally televised home football game on ESPN will be a tremendous positive for the university,? said Athletic Director Dan Radakovich. ??As the only football game on television that night, we will have an opportunity to showcase our football and athletics program as well as our university community. ??

?All of us within the Department of Athletics understand the complexities of playing host to a Thursday night game and the challenges it presents for many on campus, including professors with afternoon classes. ?We will work with President Jim Barker, university administrators and the appointed team to make the event a wonderful example of what Clemson University can do.?

Clemson opens the season at home against Georgia, the first meeting between the two long time rivals since 2003. Georgia finished the 2012 season ranked fourth by USA Today while Clemson was ranked ninth.?

The programs had legendary games during the 1977-87 era when both were consistent top 15 teams. The two teams were 5-5-1 against each other during that era and the average victory margin was just 4.7 points per game.? Nine of the 11 games were decided by a touchdown or less.

Georgia won the National Championship in 1980 and a 20-16 win over Clemson was a big victory for the Bulldogs. Clemson then won the National Championship in 1981 and a 13-3 win over the fourth-ranked Bulldogs was one of the most important wins in the Tigers drive to the title.

After a game on September 7 against South Carolina State, the Tigers will have 12 days to prepare for their first ACC game, a September 19 contest at NC State. The two teams played the second highest scoring game in Clemson history in terms of combined points in a 62-48 Tigers win last year. Clemson has won eight ?of the last nine against the Wolfpack, but NC State won the last meeting in Raleigh in 2011.

Clemson returns home for a September 28 game against Wake Forest. Clemson has defeated the Demon Deacons at Clemson six consecutive games dating to 1998.

The first game in October will be at Syracuse in what will be the first ACC game for the Orangemen. ?Syracuse will play in the ACC this year for the first time after competing in football? in the Big East every year since 1991.

It will be the second meeting on the gridiron between Clemson and Syracuse. The teams first met in the January 1, 1996 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL. The game will be played in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Clemson has won each of its last two games in domed stadiums, wins over Auburn and LSU last year at the Georgia Dome.

Clemson returns for consecutive home games October 12 and19 against Boston College and Florida State, respectively. ?Clemson has won four of the last five against Boston College, including each of the last two when the Tigers have scored at least 36 points in each game.

The winner of the Clemson vs. Florida State game has gone on to win the Atlantic Division of the ACC each of the last four years. In fact, the winner of the regular season meeting has gone on to win the ACC Championship each of the last two years. The Tigers have won five in a row over the Seminoles at Death Valley. ??Both teams finished in the top 10 of the final USA Today poll last year and should both be ranked in the top 10 of the 2013 preseason poll.

Clemson will play road games on consecutive Saturdays for the only time all year when the Tigers play at Maryland on October 26 and at Virginia on November 2. ?The trip to Maryland will be the last ACC game between the Terps and Tigers as Maryland will be in the Big Ten in 2014. Clemson and Virginia will play for the first time since 2009 when the Tigers won at Death Valley.??The trip to Virginia will be the last out of state ?game of the year.

After an open date on November 9, Clemson will play host to Georgia Tech on Thursday night, November 14. It will be the second consecutive year Georgia Tech comes to Clemson, the first time a team has played two years in a row at Clemson since the 1993-94 era when four league schools played at Clemson back to back seasons. Georgia Tech played at Clemson on a Thursday night in 1998 and came away with a close victory.

Clemson will face The Citadel at home on November 23,? giving the Tigers consecutive games against option offenses,? then finish the regular season atSouth Carolina on November 30. This will be the first time Clemson has played a non-conference game the week before meeting the Gamecocks since 1979 when Clemson played Notre Dame in South Bend the week before playing?at South Carolina.

?It is always exciting to get the schedule and plan out the season,? said Clemson Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney.? ?It will be a challenging schedule from top to bottom with three teams that finished in the top 10 last year and those teams should be top 10 teams again this year. ?It will be a challenging ACC season as well. Thursday night games bring great exposure to your program and I am glad we do not have a quick turnaround (four days to prepare) in either situation.?

Special game day designations such as Homecoming, Parents Day and Military Appreciation Day will be announced at a later date.

Christchurch marks 2nd anniversary of deadly quake

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) ? The New Zealand city of Christchurch is commemorating the second anniversary of an earthquake that destroyed thousands of homes and killed 185 people.

Several hundred people gathered for a memorial service in Latimer Square, near where 115 died when a six-story office building collapsed during the magnitude-6.1 quake. Others placed flowers in road cones or tossed them into the Avon River to commemorate those who died.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister John Key focused on rebuilding efforts. He said he understands there's frustration at the time it's taking to get homes rebuilt, but that in a few years, Christchurch will be "one of the best and most livable cities in the world."

People around New Zealand observed two minutes' silence at 12:51 p.m., the time the quake struck.

Acne treatment ? The facts | Tips on Food Fitness Life Love

?

?

Acne treatment can be really problematic. People tend to face considerable decrease in their self esteem. This is due to a lot of ugly scars and pimples one need to face on their facial skin due to acne. This is the reasons that the marketplace is full of products that claim to treat acne.

Acne is technically known as acne vulgaris. It is a type of skin disorder that has affected millions of people across the globe. This disease mainly affects the adolescents.

Acne can be categorized in two main types namely; inflammatory and non inflammatory.

a) Inflammatory acne:
This type of acne is characterized by inflamed whiteheads that ultimately result in the development of pustules and pimples. Most people consider this type of acne as the most severe for as it usually appear in the form of deep up to and pitting scars on the neck, face, back and chest. This can be quite disfiguring. This type of acne can be serious and should be treated only with prescription drugs. One may also require to go under the knife to treat acne.

b) Inflammatory acne:
This type of acne can be characterized by some blackheads and whiteheads on the face. One can treat this type of acne with the help of non prescription drugs available over-the-counter at various medical stores.

There are several types of acne treatment suggested by medical practitioners, these days. Taking non-prescription drugs for acne is very common. Here is a list of some of the most common non prescription medicine available for treating acne:

a) Salicylic acid

b) Resorcinol

c) Sulfur

d) Benzoyl peroxide

Apart from treating acne with the options available on the market, you need to keep in mind the hygiene factors required to treat acne completely. You need to keep in mind that washing face with a medicated soap twice a day is very important.

Make sure that the medicated soap is best suited for acne conditions of your facial skin. It should be free of any fragrance.

You also require to meet an experienced dermatologist in order to make sure that your facial skin is free of any problems. Also make sure that you don?t pick at pimples, squeeze your blackheads as these activities may injure your skin.

Remember that only a dermatologist can decide whether the acne type you are suffering from is moderate, mild or severe. You would be suggested the treatment accordingly. You may prevent scars only by keeping your hands away from your facial skin and maintaining good hygiene such as washing your face twice a day and keeping your bed sheets pillow covers and towels clean.

Microdermabrasion is another treatment option to remove scars of acne from facial skin. The treatment helps in enhancing overall skin tone and also prevent acne breakouts in the near future.

This treatment option is also effective in removing wrinkles, scars and sun spots from facial skin.

Laser treatment is also effective in treating acne scars wherein laser or broadband visible light is used.
