HOMEGROWN BUSINESSES: AUDIO BLOOD MEDIA | Toronto Is ...

Audio Blood Media represents some of the best up and coming bands in Canada as well as throwing great events and shows. I first heard of the company through the band The Balconies which led me to the band Sandman Viper Command both of which I have become huge fans of. ABM has a great ear for talent and I got to chat with founder Sari about the start-up and where they find all this great talent.

Who was involved with the inception of Audio Blood media and what was the idea behind it?

Audio Blood is a company that came together very organically. Not without hours of work but it was always in the back of my mind. When I was very young I started a zine called Audio Blood Zine (2006) based out of my hometown in Barrie, Ontario with my photographer friend Maria. The premise was to allow anyone who was inspired to contribute their writing and photos and opinions. It didn?t take long for it to breed a community of talented people all excited about independent Canadian music. The goal was to create a platform for this excitement that was constructive and brought people together. Before we knew it we had over 60 contributors and the team became quite close, some of the people I got to work with back then have remained great friends and important partners. The zine slowly died down while I went to school and moved out of Barrie and started working in the music industry for other companies.

I thought I would work for other music companies for a while longer before starting my own project but I was becoming restless! At the beginning of 2009 I decided to start my own company and when trying to decide on a name, I thought back to the wonderful pre-existing Audio Blood community and decided to try and breath new life in to it. So that is when the current format of AB was formed, a full service artist and brand development firm focusing on marketing/publicity campaigns. The idea however is still very much the same as it was when the project initially started. To bring great people together with great music. To help amazing artists achieve the success they deserve and inspire more people to support music.

There are a number of very amazing people that were involved with the first wave of Audio Blood and the second from all across Canada. AB has been a family for me since the age of 15 and every single person who has supported in any capacity has been a huge part of how it is shaped today. There are too many to list!

How do you find all these great bands?

They are not hard to find! You have to keep your ear to the ground and go to a lot of shows but sometimes beneath all the clutter you?ll see a young band just knock you off your feet. I?m a sucker for live music! There are a lot of amazing artists sitting in your own backyard!

If you could represent any artist alive or dead who would it be?

I?ve never thought about this! I would really like to work with tons of artists. Mostly peoples? music that I love. I think right now I would love to work with Kevin Devine. He is one of my favourite writers and I would love to bring his songs to new people in Canada! The list is very long of people I?d love a chance to work with. One of my top favourite bands is Wilco, working a project for them would be great fun. I am quite happy with what I have on my plate though and get to work with my favourite artists every day! I am very lucky!

Other than Audio Blood do you have a favourite Toronto business?

I have many. Toronto is an amazing community to grow a company in and I draw inspiration for a number of young and established businesses all the time. Here?s a quick list!

What is the best part about doing business in Toronto?

For me, the best part is that it?s a home. I?ve gotten to grow with the community here and they?ve seen AB?s ups and downs. There is a healthy music community that supports live music and there are incredibly talented people to work with. It?s a beautiful city just aesthetically and although it?s always go-go-go it?s always easy to find a rooftop, friends in the park, or a quiet place to think. These are all important things when running a business. Some of my best ideas come from out of the office. There are many things that make Toronto a great city for business, those are just a few!

What is next for Audio Blood?

Gearing up for a busy fall festival run! AB will be out at Pop Montreal, Reeperbahn, Halifax Pop Explosion, TIFF, CMJ, and more! Always working new and exciting projects and thinking about exciting ways to market great music! We are looking forward to growing our reach and team over the next year and continuing to stay loyal to our main goal of helping great artists succeed!
