Local outdoor writer places in prominent competition

MISSOULA, Mont. ? Amenia, N.D. resident Dawn Faught earned prestigious Excellence in Craft awards from the Outdoor Writers Association of America, with recognition at OWAA's annual conference in Fairbanks, Alaska, Sept. 6, 2012.

Faught was awarded first place in the Outdoor Fun and Adventure category of the Magazine Contest, which recognizes excellence in communicating the best outdoor recreation story from the various non-consumptive sports. This includes, but is not limited to, outdoor sports such as camping/backpacking, boating, hiking, birding, snow skiing, orienteering, mountain biking and general outdoor activities. Her first place submission, "Beautiful Badlands," was published June 2011 in Cowboys & Indians magazine. The Outdoor Fun and Adventure category is sponsored by the Coleman Company.

Faught was also awarded first place in the Action category of the Photo Contest for her submission "Splash Down." The Photo Contest recognizes excellence in black-and-white and color photos published or sold as fine art (gallery, website or other public display) in the contest year. The Action category includes any outdoor subject and must show or imply movement.

Faught is a freelance writer with credits in Today's Horse Magazine, Cowboys & Indians, Western Horseman, AAA Living, Persimmon Hill and Range Magazine.

The Outdoor Writers Association of America is the oldest and largest association of professional outdoor communicators in the United States. It was organized in 1927 by members of the Izaak Walton League of America and includes professional communicators dedicated to sharing the outdoor experience.
